Hi guys!

I'm sticking wIth SG Ammo for my online pruchase needs for the time being.
SG Ammo has always been good for me, just hate that Federal stopped selling the 50rd boxes of HST.
Yes! That is an excellent online resource, new to me. Thanks for sharing! :)

1000 rounds of 9mm for 45 cents a round, that's great these days. :D

Hi,

As it so happened, today I was driving by my local Big 5 on a Monday afternoon and decided to stop in just to say "Hi" and take a look at the ammo shelf, knowing that they got their shipment four days ago.

I said "Hi" to my ammo angel, Ashley, and proceeded to the firearm counter. They were out of practice 9mm but still had over a dozen boxes of the Norma SD hollow points. Imagine that?

Since we'd been talking about it in another thread, I took a closer look at their selection of knives. I'll have to do a little research into sport/utility/defense knives, what is legal to carry, and how/when to carry it.

What really caught my eye were these Smith&Wesson knives. They look pretty mean. ;)

I don't know a thing about them but I will soon. I picked up just one box of the Norma MHP defense ammo. Even with my discount it's near $2 a round today.

In talking with the clerk he mentioned that the shipments are getting more steady, more consistent, as far as what they are receiving each week, and the prices are starting to fall a bit. I hope this trend continues. In the meantime, I think I'll do a little knife research.

[Note: I inadvertently put this post in the wrong thread. Please pardon the cross-post.]

Hi,

It's Thursday again so I dropped by my local Big 5 store after work just in case they have any ammo left this late on the day of their shipment. To my surprise, again, they had ammo! It looked like over 2000 rounds of 9mm still on the shelf plus a bunch of the Norma hollow points.

843946

My ammo angel, Monica, was more than happy to sell me a 200 round range pack of the WWB for $90 after my veteran's discount (plus tax).

843947

That's only 45 cents a round. Cool! I think I'll stop by again tomorrow. There will be no limits tomorrow on whatever they have left on the shelf. Monica said last week they didn't run out until Saturday. If I can pick up a couple more range packs I'll be set for the month. She also said their distributor informed them that they would probably be shipping every other Thursday due to a shortage of workers. They might not get much of a shipment next week, if any. But if I can pick up a couple more of these tomorrow I won't have to drive to LAX Ammunition in Inglewood to pay 52 cents a round for 500 rounds. We'll see. Three ammo runs in one week? That's unheard of for me. ;)

I'm looking forward to a lot of practice next month. :D

Hi!

I had another, shall I say, VERY successful ammo run today, plus a little added excitement. I've been working a 4/10 schedule during the summer session so I've been off work on Fridays. It's nice having three day weekends during the summer to do some fun stuff, take a day trip, hang out with Mrs. BassCliff, etc. Today while the Mrs. was running errands I did the same.

As you know, Thursday is the day this Big 5 receives their shipment so they limit the amount of ammo you can buy on "shipment day". But the rest of the week there are no limits for whatever is left on the shelf. When I arrived this Friday morning they still had quite a bit on the shelf. Yay me! I purchased two of the 200 round range packs of WWB. Wow, that makes 600 rounds bought at this store in two days, plus the box of SD ammo I picked up on Monday. It feels like Christmas! :D

843999

The nice young clerk remembered my veteran discount this time and even gave me a little extra discount, 15%, wow! Each of these boxes cost me $85, that's only 42.5 cents a round! I haven't paid that low of a price in a long time. Now Mrs. BassCliff and I will be able to make it out to the range two or three times next month for training and practice.

Oh, the exciting part? I did post about it in another thread, but here's the jist...

While I was standing at the counter chatting to the clerk ringing up my sale, this young fellow walked in who seemed a bit odd. His eyes were darting around, he was mumbling, pacing nervously, etc. He interrupted my conversation with the clerk to ask, "You guys don't sell sub-machine guns and sh*t?" It's then I noticed what I first thought was his phone hanging out of his pocket. When I took a closer look he turned away. All this time I thought the poor fellow had a mental issue, or perhaps was altered by a substance abuse. He was clean, was wearing clean clothes (a red t-shirt and baggy black shorts that looked laundered), and was wearing a new looking backpack. He did not seem homeless. I told him, "Nope, fully automatic firearms are illegal in this state." The clerk and I chatted with him for a few more seconds, explaining the different between semi- and full-auto, when three officers came in, surrounded him, asked him to put his hands up, and then asked him if he had any weapons.

When the fellow put his hands up one of the officers reached into his pocket and pulled out a very realistic looking Sig Airsoft pistol. (That's what I thought at first was a phone hanging out of his pocket.) The officers escorted the young man outside to have a chat, search his backpack, etc.

As the clerk and I finished our business he told me that this person was known to the store personnel, had shoplifted there before, and that clerk had actually sold him that Airsoft pistol. It seems the fellow was known to the local police department too. He put my purchase in a double bag. He said that way it would look less like ammo when I walked out. I told him that's OK, I have a permit. :) When I walked outside there were four patrol cars and several officers on scene. I must say, the officers were very professional and polite. The young fellow complied with verbal commands. The situation did not escalate and nobody got hurt.

843998

Needless to say, I learned a bit from that encounter. Sometimes you don't have to be polite and it's OK to stare if you think something is amiss. I should've recognized that pistol grip right away as it was hanging out of his pocket. I like to think I'm pretty observant but in this case it would have paid to be even MORE observant. While Airsoft is less lethal they can still do damage. And what if it would've been a real gun? I don't know who called LEO. I doubt it was anyone in the store, police arrived too quickly after the young fellow did. I think it was someone who saw him walking the street with an exposed firearm and the young fellow ducked into the store because it was familiar to him.

OK, that's my rambling for today. Lesson learned: Be observant, be very observant. If something looks amiss, take a closer look.

Glad things turned out the way they did! Also glad that someone had the wherewithal to contact the police and that the erratic young man complied with them. Very appreciative of the folks in blue/black/khaki/green. Seems like it would have been difficult for BC to distance himself from the guy due to close quarters in the coziness of a Big 5 store, but that is really good advice.

Congratulations on your scoring another 200 today. My local haunts sold out within 6 hours of store opening yesterday. Still no 22LR (except 2 boxes subsonic that I passed on).

I stopped by the Big 5 again on the way home from work this evening. I knew they wouldn't have any practice ammo but hoped they would have some Hornady Critical Defense left.

844115

Neither of my ammo angels were around but the nice young fellow, Chris, who also sells to this old noob, was there to help me out. Unfortunately they were out of the Hornady SD ammo so I picked up another box of the Norma Monolithic Hollow Point Extreme Terminal Performance ammo.

844116

With my veterans discount this box of twenty was $1.70 per round. I have not shot this ammo yet and now that I have a few boxes I'll take one to the range next time.

Regarding the earlier "incident", I asked the clerk how the situation with our special friend turned out. I thought they might've taken him home and warned him not to do that again. Chris said the guy was arrested. Seems the police had probable cause to search his backpack. Actually they asked the guy to show them the contents and in there, along with the items that he had shoplifted, was a couple of pounds of weed. There had also been complaints from the restaurant patrons next door that this guy had been hassling the customers and showing off his "piece". I think I mentioned earlier that this guy was well known to the officers in the department, apparently lives with his grandmother, and has had more than his share of run-ins. I hope he starts making better decisions.

Chris also said that this store will not be getting a shipment this week on Thursday. He told me a couple of local stores that would be getting theirs. Seems the supply is short so the distributor is spreading around the deliveries to different stores every other week. I doubt I will buy any more ammo until I can travel to LAX Ammunition and pick up another 500 rounds in a couple weeks. I hope to have another range report soon. I'll have me some perfect practice fun. ;)

I thought things were getting back to some form of normal. Apparently not yet. I hope your ammo huntings and gatherings go well. :)

Hi,

I did not visit my local Big 5 last Thursday because I knew they would not get a delivery. I stopped by today, Friday, on my way home from work and was pleased to see the shelves still full of pistol, rifle, and shotgun ammo. The only thing they were out of this evening was .38. They had an ample supply of .40, .45, and .22 along with 2.23, 5.56, and 7.62. Wow.

844657

I didn't want to be greedy so I picked up just one box each of the 9mm Norma practice ammo and self defense ammo.

844658

With my little discount the ball ammo was 48.5 cents per round and the SD ammo was $1.75 a round. I have not had a chance to shoot the 9mm Norma yet. I know my P22 does not care too much for the Norma Tac-22 ammo. But maybe that pistol just needs to break in some more. I'll get myself to the range again soon and file a report. ;) I'm also hoping to save up some gig money and buy another 500 rounds at LAX Ammunition soon. Maybe I'll go to the range twice this month. Won't that be fun? :D Thanks for putting up with me.

Hi,

I went to the range yesterday and shot a couple hundred rounds so I felt like I had to make another ammo run today. I decided to head out to LAX Ammunition near the LAX Airport today after church. I thought, "Sunday afternoon, should be no traffic, so it'll be a quick trip." Yeah, right. I ran into a wall of traffic about halfway there. Is that smoke I see off to the right of the freeway? What kind of mess is this?

845154

Thankfully the smoke was unrelated to the freeway traffic and it was just a stalled car on the right shoulder that caused a five mile backup. @#$^$%@#!! looky-loos. After a slight delay I made it to LAX Ammo and picked up another 500 rounds of their reman.

845155

I was a little disappointed because the "free" plastic ammo can seemed cheaper than the last one I picked up here. But I won't complain, much. :p

845156

This was $239.95 so 48 cents a round is not bad these days for practice ammo. I've shot this before, it runs great, and it's pretty. ;)

845157

I was hoping to get back to a local outdoor range next weekend to use up a few hundred rounds but I can't. Drat. Saturday is when I'm moving my daughter back on campus so she can finish her degree and graduate. Ain't that something? Now, if you'll excuse me, I think I'll go count my ammo.

Greetings!

I just couldn't stay away from my local Big 5 today. Yes, it was Sunday and I had just finished running some errands and getting my truck washed. I almost passed by the Big 5 but decided to stop in just to say "Hi". As it so happened, they had numerous boxes of SD ammo in 9mm. So why waste a trip?

845544

My ammo angel, Monica, was helping another customer. When she saw me she said, "I'll be right with you!". She's nice that way. Then she actually interrupted her transaction with that customer to bring me the paperwork and pull a box of the Norma MHP defense ammo off the shelf for me. They were out of 9mm practice ammo but that's normal since they get their shipments every other Thursday as of late. I think I have at least a half dozen boxes of this now. I should go shoot a little of it.

845545

With my little veteran's discount this box was $36.09, right at $1.80 per round. Yeah, a little pricey but one box at a time won't break the bank. Plus I feel I need a bit more SD ammo. You just don't know how availability will be in the future.

That's it. I'm just an ammoholic. Perhaps I need treatment, an intervention....at the range. :ROFLMAO:

Take care, be aware, act justly, love mercy, walk humbly, fear not, be kind, be free.

Not bad for an non-delivery day! One of the larger store chains received a smallish delivery last week, no 22LR bulk, but had quite a few 50rd 9mm. By the time my turn came up, they just had a few varieties of 147gr 9mm, so I snagged my 5 box limit. Next time I may try the Blazer Aluminum 147 if they have them.

I have noticed that a lot of times the 124 (and higher) grain 9mm FMJ ammo will sell for cheaper than the 115 grain. Have you noticed this?

I've had no issues running aluminum cases, or steel. I try not to buy a lot of steel but I do have 150 rounds of Winchester steel case that I'll take the next time I go to an outdoor range. They don't allow it in the indoor range.

We are always limited to 200 rounds or three boxes (of each caliber) on delivery days. If there are any leftovers the next day there is no limit.

It seems within a brand/product line there is a $1 or so increase in price per week with increasing projectile weights--however it is difficult to discern since it is rare for the shelves to have multiple weights of the same product line on a given week. It does seem that one company's 128gr brass will be less expensive than another company's 115gr brass.

I have had no problems with the 115gr aluminum cases either. It looks like you and I picked up similar Winchester steel cases the same week--I have not yet tried them out yet.

Similarly, Big 5 up here limits one bulk pack of 150 or more or 3 boxes of each caliber on delivery days--if it is a small delivery then its one bulk pack or 2 boxes--if it is a sparse delivery 1 box per caliber.. The other big chain store seems to be gradually increasing their limits on delivery day--the lines seem to be getting shorter as well. It seems that there are no leftovers at the end of delivery days for the 9mm. 22LR seems to be hit or miss week to week.

I went to the large chain store a few towns away and arrived a bit after opening. There were 14 or so folks in front of me and spent time chatting with fellow ammo waiters. The person in front of me got the last two boxes of 9mm--that will teach me not to do a couple of chores before leaving home. I guess that is the downside of having a 5 box limit--feast or famine! No bulk 22LR, the 22 they did have was a bit pricey so left empty handed--first time being shut out in months!

On man, @clueless88 .

That's brutal. I've left empty handed a couple of times. It's not a good feeling. I'll try Big 5 again Thursday after work but I think this is their off week. They might have some SD ammo left. I swear, if they have .45ACP on the shelf in going to have to buy a 1911. :ROFLMAO:

Don't do it - stay away from 1911's

It will make you question all of your other pistol purchases. I have yet to shoot mine but I take her out of the safe every day just to hand cycle the action and pull that single action trigger.

Ha! :ROFLMAO:

Well, ya know what? I stopped by my local Big 5 yesterday knowing it was not their usual delivery Thursday. But they had several boxes of Federal .45ACP on the shelf! A week after delivery day! That means I have to get a 1911. ;)

They still had 800 round bulk packs of .22LR too. Amazing.

845758

But for now I just picked up another box of the 9mm hollow point they still had. I couldn't leave empty handed! :D

Hi,

Yesterday (Thursday) after work I stopped by my local Big 5 because they received their ammo shipment in the morning. Low and behold they still had over 1000 rounds of WWB 9mm left on the shelf. I picked up my limit of 200 rounds.

Cloud Font Mouse Red Material property

This box was $10 more than it was a couple weeks ago. Darn it. But with my discount it was still right at 50 cents a round. Since I've been saving my gig money and I still have some left, I'm going to stop by again after work today just in case there is any left on the shelf. Wish me luck. Take care, be kind, act justly, love mercy, walk humbly, fear not, be free.

Hi!

I stopped by the Big 5 again this evening and found all the 9mm practice ammo was gone. But they had lots of .22, .380, .38, .45, .223, .556, and others. I'm gonna have to break down and get me a 1911 soon. :D

Product Shelf Shelving Publication Building

On the shelf were a few 50 round boxes of the Sig V-Crown so I picked up one of those rather than the Norma MHP. My WWB was still on my desk when I got home so I took a picture of both. Now, that looks like a nice day at the range. ;)

Peripheral Computer keyboard Input device Mouse Publication

With my little discount the V-Crown was a couple pennies over a dollar a round. That's quite a bit less than the Norma MHP and not a bad price for SD rounds. I think most of the .45 was about $40 for 50 rounds, a little pricier than the 9mm practice ammo. Still, I want a 1911. :D

So my local hunting and gathering was pretty good this week. I had heard that my favorite (closest) outdoor range had burned. Then I checked the website and found out that it has been closed due to the dry fire conditions in the US Forrest Service areas. They plan to reopen on 9/17/21. The other outdoor ranges in the area are twice as far away but I've been meaning to visit them anyway. I'll let you know. ;)
