My 9mm SC has several dings in it and slight flattened areas where the slide comes back and smacks it. I was honestly pretty surprised at how beat it looks after 1000 or so rounds. My .40 on the other hand looks pretty good....who knows. Neither screw up, EVER, and both shoot like champs so I'll deal with a few dings on the barrel.
The actual metal of the barrel is "smearing"... or scoring. It's the back part of the barrel, on the left side, that's square and flat and rubs against the slide.
