Bad magazines?

Hey guys, I have a .40 Tac and I just started to have major jamming issues with all ammo. I let a buddy of mine borrow my 2 12 rnd magazines a few weeks ago so he could have spares at the range. After I got them back I went shooting and this is where the fun started. I've always shot UMC, & WWB but this time I would chamber a round fire it, and the next round would try and chamber but would get jammed pointing straight up every time. When I checked my magazines they looked slighty tampered with. The magazines were tight around the ass end of the casings but loosened up around the rest of the bullet (basically making a "door hinge" effect). I called my buddy up and he said he was having trouble with shooting his reloaded ammo and said he had bent the mag lips a bit. I was extremely pissed at this point and told him he owes me 2 new magazines. I tried to bend them back the best I could but nothing seems to fix my problem. Do you guys think that having a bad magazine would cause the problem I'm having?

yes.

just keep playing with the feed lips on the mag, you will eventually find their spot for reliable feeding.
Well, I should have mentioned that this is also a carry gun. I would feel much better getting new magazines just to be safe.
Thanks.

yeah thats understandable. i never said not to get new mags, i just said that the ones that are giving you problems arent ruined.
Your buddy owes you 2 mags. Why would he bend up your mags when he had his own to jack up? Mark
You might want to change his title from "buddy" to "jackoff"

That sucks, man, I'm sorry. But, you're right, it is an excuse to get more magazines. Therooster is right, you can use the old one's at the range as extras...

Buy 2 new mags for carry and dont loan them to you BUDDY. Keep the other 2 mags for range use only and keep working with them and you will probably get them to work again.
The mag lips can be formed back to their original location.

Put a round in the mag and observe the location of the lips relative to the case on the top.

If the lips are open too far, then find a hard surface, like a fireplace hearth or smooth concrete floor and bend them back toward each other by pressing hard on the lips on that surface. Push on one side, then on the other. Your hand and arm strength will be enough to bring them back in a little each time.

After you do this, put a round back into the mag, and observe the location of the lips relative to the case on the top each time. You will noticed that the front side of the lips will be closer together. Keep adjusting and test the mags until you are sure that they work well again.

I had to do this to my original factory 12 round mags - the style with three witness holes (4, 8, 12). But I did not have to adjust the new styled mag that came with witness holes for case 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12. That one worked perfectly out of the box.

I agree with railroader. Your "buddy" owes you two new mags. Even if you do form the feed lips back into a workable shape, they will never be the same. Your "friend" wasn't concerned with what his tinkering would due to the action of your weapon.

Mags are not so expensive that you are asking too much. If he really is a friend, he will understand that he acted like a moron and will ante up.

These were the mags with the 3 witness holes. I'm hoping that these new mags will be a bit better when it comes to feeding.

Thanks for all the replies.
I just wanted to make an update. I went to my local gun store and bought 2 new mags (the ones with the 8 witness holes) with the $50 bucks my buddy coughed up, and also tested it at their range to make sure my prior mags were crap. It shoots like butter now with zero problem. I can finally sleep good at night knowing my gun is fully functional once again. I'm going to take these new mags and make a imprint of the mag lips from a piece of playdough then try and bend the bad mags to this shape.
Thanks.
