What's the difference in grain .I have a xd 40 .40 not sure what is the best ammo ???

Grain is a measurement of weight. The more grains, the heavier the bullet (180gr is heavier than 165gr, for instance).

As far as range ammo, it really doesn't matter. Whatever you can find cheapest, and your gun likes.

AS far as defensive ammo, heavier tends to be better.

The .40 cal was developed with a 180grn lead, as this may also be the most common grn for the .40. I had a particular liking to the 165's but I had no problems with the 180's either.

FYI there are 7000 grains in a pound.

Like Cudda I like the heaver 180gr it tends to perform slightly better.

I tend towards 180, however have shot 135, 155, 165 as well.

Preferred brands are Federal HST's, Speer Gold Dots, or Winchester Ranger T's.
