I was rummaging around my vault and found 2 mags. They have no markings and they are for the M1A, yes they do hold 40 rounds. They aren't 2 magazines welded together. For the sake of my curiosity has anyone of anything like this. Next time I bring my M1A to the range I am going to try one!

Likely an aftermarket magazine, although not very common. Reliability has always been an issue when it comes to these 30/40 round aftermarket mags. 40 round box magazines are also not very practical as you can't shoot them while prone and there are few (if any) mag pouches that would fit them.
The only thing bigger that I've seen is the X-products 50 round drum. If you want a reliable, higher capacity magazine then look at the CMI 25 round,
