Fishheads,
Welcome to the forum! Congrats on your new S&W 686... it is a great revolver, very accurate. When you open the cylinder, inside the hinged joint (the "crane") there should be a "model-variation" number stamped, for example "686-4." Which one do you have?

Fishheads,

Welcome to XD Talk!

Congrats on the new shootin iron.

Have fun with it!

The only differences I am aware of with the 686 are with bbl length and capacity (6 shot and 7 shot). The 586 was a blued finish version.

There was also a Model 681 and 581...which were the same pistols with fixed sights. Great shooters, but they had fixed sights.

Congrats on the purchase, I've had my 686 6 inch ported for about 10 years now and I love it. I've been wanting to replace the pac grips with a nice wood set but can't get over the comfort of rubber. It's a great shooter and accurate as can be. I just picked up a model 625 .45 acp with a 4 inch barrel, I must say I love the 4 inch.
