I am interested in the XDM 9mm subcompact or the XDM .40 subcompact. Had a dealer call Springfield last week and he was told that they would not be available for sale until end of month Feb 2011 or first part of Mar 2011. Has anyone heard differently? I am intersted in getting asap if and when I can find one.

XDM line does not come in a sub-compact...........they make a compact, and the 9mm version is already out........the .40cal should be shipping by the end of the month........the XD series comes in a 9 and a 40 sub compact

the xdm 3.8 9mm compact is only a little bit longer than the xd9sc it is shorter in height than the xd9sc and is thinner than the xd9sc.

So to me the xdm 3.8 compact is as much a sub compact as the xd9sc is! Trust me on me the xd9sc will print more than the xdm compact due to thickness of the xd9sc.

This is what I'm "mulling" around in my head now........

    XD/SC or XDM/C (9mm)...............
I was at my local shop today, axed to see both, but I think they showed me the wrong XDM because the grip "height" was longer than the XD, almost bought the XD because of that, but I need to confirm what I was looking at, I guess.

I'm doing a "search" to compare the two "size-wise"......

anybody got a link for size comparison?

If I were just looking for one gun, it would be the XD(M) 3.8 Compact.

Here is a compare shot of my SC laying on the XD(M) 3.8 Compact

There is a xdm 3.8 with the long reg handle, the one you want is the xdm 3.8 compact it's handle is small like the xd9sc

the XDm 9mm comes in 3 flavors right now:

    4.5" barrel full size grip
    3.8" barrel full size grip
    3.8" barrel compact grip

If they showed you a gun with a grip longer than the XD9SC, then you were shown the regular full size 3.8. You want the 3.8 compact. Big difference, yet 2 gun stores I went to and asked to see a XDm compact showed me the full size 3.8. Neither got my buisness.

THAT's what I'm looking for, great shot, gives me the size difference, although looks like the barrel on the XDM is about an inch longer as somebody said.
    THX!

On the Springfield website, they list the XDm9 3.8 Compact as having a 3.8 inch barrel, with overall length (slide) of 7 inches.

The XD9 SubCompact lists with a 3 inch barrel, with overall length of 6.25 inches (slide).

For the height, a compact magazine (13-rounds) puts the XDm 3.8C at 4.6 inches, going up to 5.75 inches with "X-Tension" and use of the 19-round magazine. The XD9-SC lists at 4.75 and 5.5 inches, respectively (the latter with a 16-round magazine).

I'm glad I joined this forum, I knew I'd like you guys! :)

My local store today obviously showed me the XD SubCompact and the XDM, NOT the compact, with the taller grip which looked way out of proportion when compared to the XD/sc.

Not to get off-topic, but do any of you have either the XD or XDM and also a S&W M&P OR SD?

I'm just trying to educate myself since the last time I had a pistol it was an ARMY .45 during the SE ASIA war.

Thanks for all your input! ;)

^ My initial purchase decision was between the XDm9 (full-sized 4.5 inch model) and the S&W M&P 9 Pro.

The XDm9 had a Springer Precision trigger kit (he worked the trigger down to 3 lbs. 5 oz., trigger total travel is .33", take-up is .165" reset is .165"). The S&W M&P 9 Pro had the Apex sear and SSS Ti firing pin block installed (subjectively, the M&P's trigger felt better).

I'm a beginner myself, so take my advice here with a huge grain of salt.....

But I truly believe that these two are similar enough that it's going to be down to shooter-preference.

I lusted after the M&P 9 Pro. I think it's a hell of a sexy handgun. The full-size XDm, to this day, I still think they're kinda ugly (the story changes when it comes to the XDm9 3.8 Compact: I think its proportions are just right, and that it's a really good-looking beast).

But I tell you what: I shot the XDm9 so much better than the M&P 9 Pro. Everything from aimed shots to rapid succession showed the same. At 5 yards, on a head-sized targets, my 50 or so rounds from the XDm9 simply shredded the eyes/nose area, while the M&P's spread out a bit all over the entire "head."

Since my goal for the purchase was SD/HD, my only justification for purchase was how the firearm performed in my hands - and it was "the ugly gun" that I ended up taking home, the XDm9.

I'd encourage you to find a range that rents both, and put a couple of hundred rounds down-range. This decision should literally make itself. :)

    Yes, I've got all three.

    XD Service 9mm - Bitone
    XDm Compact 9mm - Black
    S&W M&P-SC 9mm - Black
