Well I thought I try new ammo for my 4" Service 45ACP. I saw 50rds - 45 ACP Federal LE Tactical HST 230gr. HP. I spent about 36 bucks with shipping. I Have to say they are the worst ammo I have ever shot. Couple of weeks back I went to the range and thought I will shoot my new ammo. I load 5 rounds blazer brass, 3 rounds federal, and 5 rounds blazer brass to see if I notice any different. I started shooting without counting and sure enough it FTF after the first round of Federal. Try again and again FTF. I finish off the rest of the mag and I was so mad I left. I first thought it was my mag, so I took it apart and clean it.

2 weeks later (Last Monday) I went to the desert with a couple of friends to try out our collection of guns. I think we had a total of 20 different guns. I had a lot of fun and sun burn. Anyhow, I took this time 26 rounds of my federal and load 2 mags full (Different mags then the one I took to the range). I started shooting and sure enough 1st was good, 2nd FTF, 3 FTF,4 good, 5 good, 6 FTF and so on and on and on. Try second mag. Well you got the idea. Lucky I try these ammo out before I save it for home defense or carry. I would not and will not depend my life on these ammo. I got it from Gunbroker by the way. I am to lazy to post pictures. If anyone is thinking about this ammo. Please think again.

I've never had any issues with them in over 400rds of the stuff & use it as my defense choice as well. Only difference is I use the standard round, not the +P. They're surprisingly accurate, too! Did both of the mags experience issues? Springs maybe? I can't imagine the rounds would have too much trouble chambering considering they've got a less bulbous profile than the Speer Gold Dots or the SXT's/Talons. Sorry to hear about your malfs, though. :(

Also it seems you have plenty of know-how & guns, but you may want to break in your XD's barrel/feed ramp before using any kind of HP rounds... they tend to prefer it from what I've read here on the boards...about 500rds maybe?

i dont think is the mags. I have 4 mags total. I try them all. And I have FTF on all of them. Lost count lol. I shot about 700 rounds through my xd already. Maybe is the +P, I dont know. I dont have issues with any other ammo I try. I only bought 50 rounds just to see how it is. I used all the 50 rounds and I will not be going back.

This has been discussed several times. Many people have had problems with Fed HST, myself included. The mouth of the hollow point is wider than normal and some guns just won't feed it. However, some will. If yours does, consider yourself fortunate. It's not just the .45, I've also had problems with the .40S&W too. It's the bullet design which can cause problems.

There are many other PD rounds, if your gun doesn't feed HST reliably, move on and don't worry about it.

    1. Just because it wont feed in YOUR(read XDs) gun doesn't mean its crap. It actually happens to be an awesome round. Many LE agencies are going to it.

    2. This is why you test your defensive loads before you depend on them. Its trial and error. You find a load you like, and test it for function in your weapon.

Yours didn't like HST, so go try Gold dots, Ranger, or any of the other defensive loads on the market.

Yup. Your weapon just doesn't like it. Pick another quality defensive round and try that one.

I had one FTF out of about 15 rounds that I fired of regular 230gr hst. That was in my service 45 XD. I now live in NJ so I had to go to Federal Expanding Full Metal Jackets. No complaints so far.

I have shot this load in my XD-45 Tactical, Springfield 1911A1 Loaded, and S&W 4506 with no failures to feed or extract.

It's not "the worst ammo", your XD just doesn't like it. It's one reason you have to test carry ammo in your specific pistol. They wrok fine for some & not for others. SPeer GDSB may also be a problem because of the wide HP. Just find a round your XD likes. Rem. GS are almost FMJ profile & work fine in just about anything. Ranger & SXT are also pretty feed profile friendly.

Yeah, not sure how well it performs in penetration tests. I found it a little to "flashy" in 9mm. ie large fireballs. Ones things certain..it will feed properly.

Take a few moments to peruse through the Ammo section and through the XD 45ACP Discussion forums and you will find the cure for this problem.

I've only shot a box (50) of this stuff through my gun because it's expensive, but I've had no problems. I broke my gun in with around 300 rounds of regular 230 grain FMJ's before I tried this stuff. So far this gun has fired every bullet with no problems.
