Okay, I'm not sure why I would want to buy an AR-15. What purpose would it serve me as a private citizen? Shed some light and your feelings please. :)

    Because you can!
...and because there are a gagillion configurations available...enough to fit any need you may have!...

I built mine as a plinker and because I could! Recently I have used it to hunt hogs!

AR-15s are some of the most customizable rifles available. They serve a wide variety of important purposes.

Target shooting. Hunting (small to large game depending upon the caliber you choose). Self defense, and civil defense.

I wouldn't be caught without a rifle in my house, and my AR-15 fits that bill well.

    Your results may very.

Go shoot someone's then tell me you don't want one.

You can set them up to do ANY job you could ask a rifle to do. Long range precission, shot range CQB, Competition, ect, ect, ect.

Not to mention the politicians don't like them that's a really good reason to own one. :D

I bought a AR15 in a 9mm caliber. Great shooter... even at 100 yds. Then I went for a 223/5.56 upper... now I have 2 guns for one price. I have my pistols for hd and now mid range rifle and of course my 30.06 for anything longer then 200 yds. I have the yardage covered if I ever need it. Why AR? Because you can right now.... Will it change who knows... but the prices keep getting higher and higher. I felt if I didn't jump on it now it would be out of range for the average income folk. Good luck.

No, no joke. I'm wanting to know people's opinion on why I should go out and drop a $1000 on one.

I'm going to be the odd man out and say don't....yet.

If you don't see the need or the desire for one without our help just owning one probably wouldn't help you much.

Become familiar with the gun you have. If you go shooting enough, and interact with enough other shooters eventually the bug will bite you.

    Because you can...

No feelings needed. Just as simple as it gets. We have freedoms that other people take for granted.

Not make up my mind, just share the insights to the AR community. Why you bought it, what you use it for, why it is good to have, etc.

I am not a huge fan of the AR platform. I consider them underpowered and finicky. Reliability is not great. Everyone always said "my ar is reliable" and then adds "as long as". That said, I own two. THey are, for better or worse, the company gun. As someone who is in security/LE... you are going to be dealing with them for a long time. The politics of the day being what they are, you should get one while you can (or at a minimum, get a couple of receivers).

My favorite AR is a Bushmaster lower, with an ace fixed stock and a CMMG light weight upper. It shoots well, is reliable, and weighs in at 5.5 lbs. It does most everything a 9 lb M4gery does.

For serious use, I'd rather have a 30 caliber something, but as long as you know the limitations of the 556 round, its a good fighting implement.

I don't want to hijack your thread so I'm not going to opine on what the best rifle is, but AR15s are here to stay.

if you dont want one, dont get one. do you want us to BEG you?

a fighting RIFLE is just as, if not more important as a fighting PISTOL.

If you cant figure out why the american public NEEDS military type weapons, then re-read the constitution, the bill of rights, and american history over and over till you get it.

AR15s are tools. Like hammers they perform certain functions based on what the user needs or wants.

A year ago I had the same question you had. I thought $1,000 was too pricey, and a steep learning curve to boot. A buddy changed my mind. It is a truly modular rifle with available parts everywhere.

Finally, the best reason I know to own one... Next to my AR I keep my voter's reg. card, and copies of the U.S. Constitution & Declaration of Independence. Do that and tell me you don't feel like a citizen instead of a resident of whatever state you're from.

I'm kinda corny, but I take this stuff seriously.

I went to a pistol/carbine match yesterday day and it was the first time I shot an AR. I knew I wanted to have one eventually for the range, home defense, and just a general purpose rifle. I can't hunt with a semi auto rifle in PA, but I can still shoot the crap out of it at the range. After competing yesterday with the rifle, I've decided to get one as soon as possible. I really enjoyed shooting it and the competition. If you have any concerns of ever needing to defend yourself with anything more than a pistol from nature, rioting, SHTF, terrorism, whatever, you might want to be armed with something better than only a pistol.

Basically just to say you have one and if zombies even came about, you'd be pretty good to go. Living in NJ it isnt practical for me to have one so I'm selling mine.

    Becasue I can.

Because I may not be able to again if another weapons ban is put in place.

Because it is the most enjoyable rifle I have to shoot.

Go to a range that will let you rent one, or go shooting with a friend who has one and will let you use it. Put a couple of hundred rounds through it. Come back and tell me you don't want one.

And if you are spending $1,000 on a basic rifle, you are spending way too much.
