I'm just curious who actually likes this abomination of the latest offering from Springfield. It seems like they are just putting out whatever crap they can to boost sales. This thing is hideous. I liked the original XD, even had a couple of them but got rid of them. XDM came out and I wasn't impressed. Then the XDs and no, not for me. Now this? Dear God. I just hope they keep the designers of this away from the 1911's. Its almost like they are trying to compete with Steyr or Hi-Point for ugliest firearm.
So my question here is, who honestly likes this and is planning on getting one? I would love to hear reasons other than, "Its an XD so it must be good".
I might get one, but not for my own use. The 1.1" width measurement at the disassembly lever is tempting, and I know the XD's ergos are pretty decent. The more pronounced undercut of the trigger guard and backstrap are interesting attempts at mitigating the XD's high bore axis. Not a fan of a few other things, but they only affect aesthetics and doesn't make me concerned about reliability.
I'll put my hands on one and make my determination from there.
You really nailed it. I was thinking the same thing ... literally since the second the "tease pic" with the GRIP ZONE in the flesh; it's been a huge joke. One has to really think who is in charge of marketing ... if anyone.
Makes me wonder if they used a focus group of people who know nothing about or even like guns at all. Perhaps a group of antigunners thinking that if they make the guns ugly enough that people will stop buying them.
I like a few of the refinements like the undercut trigger guard, the scalloped cocking serration is cool, and a decent set of sights. I think the grip zone on the grip is a huge swing and miss. I'm not in the market for that style of gun right now so certainly won't rush out and buy one, but I would give it some consideration if I were.
I bought two XDS pistols, one 45 and one 9mm. Love them. I don't own an XD, but would consider the XD Mod. I have to say, the XDM is high on my list for another SA pistol. I handled one at the LGS and if I had the money, it would have went out with me. I loved the trigger. I will reserve judgement on the XD Mod until I can hold it and see what is what. After owning a RIA with the big billboard sign on it, the Grip Zone doesn't seem that bad.
My first post boys, so please don't beat me up to bad! I am personally very attracted to this new gun! From a females perspective I think it's going to fit my hands nicely. I was considering the XDM compact because it was also a nice fit, but to me, I think this will be even more so, and I really like the improvements that they made. I am hoping that when I actually get to handle one that the controls and slide will be a little easier to manipulate. Of course my feelings could change once I do handle it, but I hope not. The grip zone labeling doesn't even really bother me, I agree it was unnecessary, but it's not a deal breaker
Hey welcome to the forum, my wife told me she preferred this MOD.2 even over the XDS because of the feel of the grip. She commented that this was for shooting not for looking at. It seemed the guys were more concerned about cosmetics over the gun actually fitting you and working.
Welcome, and good first post (better than many). If you spend some time here, you will come to see some of us "know" each other, so some of the comments back and forth are more harsh-seeming than they really are. Then there are haters and wars, be it platforms/guns, calibers etc. This mod.2 is definitely an instigator of such things. I love my beretta 92a1 for example, but it gets a lot of hate because of the slide mounted safety/decocker. I kind of like the mod.2 as except for the "grip zone" text. Will have to get my hands on one.
The general consensus (of course there are exceptions) is if you like it, and can shoot it well, then it is good (at least for you).
The xd is a reliable platform, fwiw, i have an xdm compact and love it.
To be fair, even if Springfield has bigger ideas on the horizon, they would be insane to stake a lot of money into producing them, knowing we're going into a presidential election cycle.
Thanks for the warm welcome guys! It's really appreciated! I have been reading the xd forums for quite awhile, but didn't make an account until yesterday, you guys have some great information in all the forums, and I can appreciate the sense of humor you all have as well, and it's that reason that I decided to get a little more involved, you guys seem like a great group to me! James I did read your reviews in the other thread and I was glad you wrote about your wife liking the feel of it, did she shoot it yet? The more videos I watch and information I come across the more I want it, I didn't like the feel in my hands of the xds either, even though I'm sure it's a great gun, just not for me..
She did and now I have to coat one for her, in some pretty colors. She does not carry, but this will be her car gun replacing a S&W J frame. I let here choose her guns and she said she was ready for an "upgrade".
I don't know what the original poster finds so "hideous" about it. I think it is a nice looking weapon.
I like the looks of it. Other than the "grip zone" deal on it.
Will I buy one. Absolutely not. Just because I do not like ANY pistol with a shortened grip. I like full sized grips. I like the control a full sized grip gives me.

In the online ad they show it in a small & delicate female hand. Probably because it would look ridiculous in my XL mega paws. I'm known for regularly complaining about how so many guns have grips evidently made to fit the hands of 12-year-old girls. This would be one of those guns.
Trust me, I understand the desire for a smaller gun that's concealable. I have a concealed carry permit, though thus far I've only open carried with a Glock 34 holstered to my belt. (That's the competition 9mm Glock with a 5.3" barrel which will ram its muzzle into a seat if you dare to sit, and ram the butt of the grip into the back of the seat because it was clearly never made for carry. It was made to be the size of 1911 to meet IDPA rules.) I make due with it because I don't want to assert my rights enough to buy a smaller gun.
I think everyone agrees that we could do without the grip zone. Other that that I like the looks of it as well. I will have to handle one before I make the final decision but it's between this or a Walther PPS for my EDC.
All tom-foolery aside, I kinda like it. I can see it being successful.
And my theory is that "Grip Zone" was the work of the low man on the design team's totem pole... and the head designer only hired him because he's his sister's kid.... and he didn't contribute anything to the whole process, so when he came up with this train wreck, the head designer had to keep it because his sister would be pissed if he fired her son...
I took one look at this gun, ONE, and said, "OMG that looks ridiculous". How did this go from someones bright idea, through the marketing braintrust, to final approval by someone, to getting tooled up to actually do it, without someone, anyone saying "hey, um, this looks really dumb"?
How does that happen? This idea should never have made it out of photoshop. Surely someone at SA looked at that and objected.
'Cause I'm gonna tell you something - I like everything about this gun, except that stupid Grip Zone printing on the grip. And you know what, I'm not going to buy one because of it. Yes, I could cover it with grip tape - I don't like grip tape on my guns (I'm that guy). I like the grip on my XDs. That Mod.2 grip looks great, but that lettering is just, damn, wow, bad.
This is a gun, not a piece of athletic gear. I sincerely hope SA comes out with an update sans lettering, 'cause I ain't buying this.
Who? Honestly? Is longtalltechsan?
You got rid of all your XDs, own none and just dropped by to insult the latest model? If you were a dinner guest and acted like that I'd boot you out the door.
I am just as entitled to my opinion as anyone else. Just because I don't own any more XD's doesn't mean I can't have an opinion on this board. I have been a member here for almost as long as you and so therefore I will continue to post here when I want. I started my own thread to discuss it. You are more than welcome to NOT comment if you don't like it. The fact is, many others feel the same way, as you can see by reading this thread and others, so obviously others share my opinion.
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
