What is your preferred caliber that you like and use best for SD/HD? How did you come up with that preference/why do you like it so much? Please keep it with the 4 main Semi-auto calibers in the poll. :)

Me, I like the .45acp. I shoot it best, but the cost of ammo is just so dang expensive compared to the other calibers.

.45 because they don't make a .46. Go big or go home

I prefer the XD .40 for self defense/CCH because it really packs a punch and I have more rounds to use than your typical .45.

I mostly train with XDm 9mm because the cost of ammo is lower compared to the .40.

I still train with the .40, just not as often as the 9mm.

Looking to purchase an XDm .40 in the near future to replace the XD .40.

    45ACP. Been killing BG's for 100 years...

Seriously though, I want to throw the heaviest bullet I can. Mass matters, especially in peripheral hits. Plus I find I shoot a 45 better than the others. YMMV.

I love the 45acp but its hard to carry when it's warm out or if I have a dress up. 9mm on most days.

My daily 9-5 gun is a .380 acp but the other hours of the day and for home defense I have a .45 auto Kimber for that job.

Kicking around a 9mm carbine for HD but the .223/5.56 will probably win.

40, because I like my XDM40 and can shoot it relatively fast and accurate. But on some days I relegate that to my backup gun if I put on the shoulder holster and take the 44mag revolver out. I like 45 also, but do not trust my 45 for self defense, maybe when it comes back from the shop it will be more reliable. I also am considering a Beretta px4 Storm in 45, shot that at the range and would definitely have no qualms about using that for self defense. So if I pick up that Beretta, or my old 45 starts acting nice, I could change my vote.

1911's are slowly taking over from the XD's for CC. Prefer .45 but do sometimes carry an XD9sc. .40 is just a gamer cartridge for me.

.45 ACP because it makes bigger holes. If the .45 makes bigger holes and they all get adequate penetration (9mm, .40, and .45) how can it not do more damage than those other calibers? Serious question.

I'm new to handguns, and I went with 9mm. I can afford to shoot it which will make me a better shooter. If the time comes to use it I'd rather hit the BG with a well placed 9mm from practice, than graze 'em with a poorly placed .45! This may change with experience and economics, but that's where I'm at.

I choose 9X19 for several reasons. I like to compete and shoot the same thing in practice/competition as I carry. I shoot enough that the cost difference is substaintial. If you plan on shooting a couple of boxes of rounds per year the cost won't come into play, but if you are shooting a 1000 rounds per month it is a big deal. I bought two new competition guns one year and spent more on the ammo than the cost of both guns combined that year.

380 mouse gun vs small 9. The 9 reliably opens a good hollow point design with it's increase in velocity, a 380 is very popular carry gun but the performance isn't what I am looking for. I can shoot Winchester White Box, Blazer or UMC for range rounds (yes I do reload, but as I get older find that buying 9mm in bulk is very reasonable these days compared to component costs). I then can buy Gold Dots or Ranger T for more serious work.

I persoally like guns that take the same type of ammo. I have four 9mms: Two competition guns (g34's) a carry gun (G19) and a small single stack 9 (Kahr CW9).

As long as you have a reason that makes sense to you, why you want a certain caliber, that is cool with me. Whatever you get, actually shooting it is more important that buying it, talking about it's great ballistics and then leaving it in the safe and not training with it.

.45 all the way. The ability to carry 13+1 makes the capacity issue irrelevant.

I love to shoot .45, but due to cost and what I carry I use .40 S&W. I don't think there is a big kick over a 9mm (at least that bothers me) and I can make .40 @ home so the cost is not so bad. I like having a few more rounds even if they are a little smaller than a .45

9mm. Shot all 3 main pistol calibers. 9 was best choice for me all around. I can afford to shoot all the time (which is rapidly improving my skills) I can shoot all day with out fatigue and if my wife ever decides to jump in I can get her accustomed to something easy to shoot off the bat so as not to scare her off.

I do want a .45 though. I wont lie. I think a XD.45c will be in my future unless they bring a compact M out in .45. DROOOOOOL.
