I am looking to pull the trigger this tax season on a AK and am looking for something reliable as my Smith&Wesson M&P 15 sport AR 15, also in the same price bracket
Here is my list so far.
1. Century Arms C39 Classic
2. RAS AK
3. Yugo Zastava N-PAP AK 47
4. Wasr 10
I have lately been really leaning towards the Zastava N-PAP out of all of these. Will take any suggestions on which one of these or any others that I don't have listed but in the same price range and reliable. Thank you
I got the Zastava NPAP M70 for Christmas. I like it a lot, but the high comb on the wooden stock makes it a pain (literally) to shoot, so I'm going to swap the stock on it. Other than that, I really like it.
I just bought a WASR 10 as my first AK a couple weeks ago and I love it so far! Perfectly reliable and it groups pretty well too! It's a basic AKM style gun and is a great beginner's AK if you're new to the platform (like I am). I will say that while the NPAP is a great gun too, the WASR has the advantage of being a standard AK that can accept much more aftermarket stocks, grips, etc. if you later want/need to upgrade. I got my WASR at a gun show here in NoVA for $525 plus tax and it came with 2 mags (one steel surplus and one polymer TAPCO).
WASRs are the AK a lot of guys love to hate but in truth the ones being made now are of very good quality. Some of the older ones had problems in the 1990s-early 2000s but the new guns Century is putting together are much improved!
while I don't think you'd go wrong with any of the guns you're considering I'd go with the WASR for the reasons aforementioned. Good luck and be sure to let us know what you end up getting!
Thanks for the information, I have been looking at both, but I really just want to keep it simple looking standard AK. Also Axel2078 what kinda of stock options are out there I have only seen one style so far that will fit. Thanks for any suggestions. I have been going back and forth between the WASR 10 and the N-PAP. I just have read that the Wasr 10's where junk and a lot of AK fans out there say they hate all Century Arms AK's.

You can get just about any stock for the NPAP rifles, but because the receiver is different than a regular AK receiver, you would also need a receiver adapter to mount the stock. Basically, you put the adapter on the receiver of the rifle and then mount the stock to that receiver adapter. You could put a telescopic stock on it just like most AR's have, or you could do a folding stock or a fixed stock. Some really popular fixed stocks are the ACE skeleton stock and the DPH skeleton stock. I plan on getting the ACE skeleton stock for mine.
Edit: I think the telescopic stock would require more parts than just the receiver adapter.
Well this won't really be my first AK, I have had SKS, Egyptian AK with sport stock with thumb whole, had a Hungarian also at one time, just had to sell them and really miss shooting the 7.62x39 mm. I am already wanting another style AR so I have also been thinking about that instead of the AK but I already have a AR in 5.56 and want something a bit more cheaper to shoot.
I got also a 45 and what another one of those also, I got the shooting bug again and this time not selling no matter what. If I had every firearm I owned from 18 to now I would need a bigger place. Thanks for all the suggestions, I can get a WASR 10 at my local sporting goods store for 599.00. I just would order online but would like to hold the firearm before I purchase.
I've shot a couple PAPs now and I agree, the stock blows. The grip has to go but I swap all AK grips to Magpul or US Palm. PAPs are also heavier. I got a Century M74 that I'm completely in love with so I'd have to lean towards the WASR.

I second the SAIGA if you are comfortable converting...if not, go WASR or go home
