The book calls for a max of 2.6 with the 55 grain tipped bullet but I'm using the Sierra Game King which is a hollow point. I loaded one round to 2.24 and it still barely fit in the mag. Another thing I noticed is IMR 4198 is a little hard to measure.

My loads for my AR are at 2.240" with a 55gr. Hornady V-Max. I think my book is MAX OAL 2.275 for that round. H335 powder seems to measure fine and maintains great 100yd grouping out of my 16" AR. Tried some IMRs and Varget, didn't shoot too great. I'm thinking of buying some of the CFE223 and see if it's any good.

The only powder they had was the IMR. I just wanted something to get started with. I guess I could've bought Blue Dot.

In my AR, I run pretty much everything @ 2.250", that way I guarantee it fits. Yes, ALL stick powders meter like crap. Most of us using progressives have gone to one of the ball/spherical powders. For Varget fans, try AA2520. Even AA bills it as ball Varget. I find I get slightly better accuracy than I do with Varget, probably because it meters better.

Those sticks are massive in terms of powder. I didn't even try to run it through the measure. I just used a scoop and trickler. Of course it's going to take forever but I'm in no hurry.

Not sure if this will help you but I use an OAL of 2.220" with Hornady 55 gr FMJ bullets. My load recipe of 26.2 gr W-748 ignited by a CCI 450 (or now CCI 41) has worked well in my rifles (both 12 and 8 twist rates). Good luck!

My barrel is also a 1:8 twist. Hopefully I can find some different powder soon.

With my original AR, a Bushy Shorty, I could load to 2.260", which is the longest I could load and use the mags. Pmags required a slightly shorter o.a.l. However, I have subsequently acquired a RRA with Wylde chamber and the leade is much shorter. Have also found a couple of DD barrels in 5.56 that won't take 2.260".

Shot 10 rounds out of my mid-length AR with a Ranier barrel in the backyard tonight. They functioned fine but seemed to be a bit more powerful than the military rounds I usually shoot. Maybe it's just because I haven't shot it in over a year. I have a new appreciation for how powerful this round is. The 55 grain Gamekings went through a stack of old school books like nothing. I figured with the hollow tip it would've mushroomed pretty big and stopped.

I load the same as Mercmar. All my mags allow 2.260"

Glad for this post as I was just going to address this. The .223 is my 1st rifle cartridge reload experience. Here's some results from today.

    Powder - CFE223
Bullets - Sierra 55gr GmKng HPBT, Sierra Varminter 63gr SP

My AR is 16" 1:9 barrel, but we fired the loads thru friends 20" 1:8 match barrel

According to Hodgdon's data site they have COAL at 2.20. At suggestion of local High Power match shooters, they suggested 2.25-2.26. So I loaded them at 2.25. We Chrono'd them today and here are the numbers compared to Hodgdon's Load data.

    SIE 55grn, 2.250 COAL, 26.5gr CFE (3 shot groups)
    2895 fps
    2911
    2877 - AVG 2894
    Hodgdon Data:
    SIE 53grn, 2.200 COAL, 27.0gr CFE - 3245
    28.5gr CFE - 3415
    ---------
    SIE 63grn, 2.250 COAL, 26.0gr CFE (3 shot groups)
    2826 fps
    2800
    2796 - AVG 2807
    Hodgdon Data:
    SIE 63grn, 2.200 COAL, 25.0gr CFE - 2957
    26.4gr CFE - 3113

The list I have from Hodgdon doesn't have the Sierra 55gr HPBT I used so the 53 gr was the closest. Based on these numbers would loading these at the 2.20 OAL be safe enough and put us in the zone that Hodgdon lists?

The tightest group (shot at 50 yds) for the 55gr was 26.0 grns and the same for the 63 grn SP. Looking for opinions on shortening the COAL to 2.20.

Note: friend's upper had trouble feeding the 2.250s so we single loaded them during testing.
