Twice in the past month, while buying aquarium fish at Walmart, I have been warned by the cashiers to lift the fish above the security sensors while exiting to avoid killing the fish. I explain to them that I have 10 years experience in the operation of RF systems, and that in no way will these sensors harm the fish. Last night, I even began to explain why it wasn't possible, only to remember that I was talking to a Walmart cashier, and that she would have no idea what the hell I was talking about.

Walking through a weak RF field will not harm your fish. What will harm your fish is improper care. "Float" your fish in the bag of container they came in for 30 minutes or so to equalize temperature. Failure to do so may stress the fish to the point of death.

Use a water conditioner when using tap water. Alternatives to this include buying RO (Reverse Osmosis) water, or using "aged water. Aged water is water that has been sitting in containers, covered yet open to the air, thus allowing chlorine and other chemicals to dissipate.

Rinse all plants, gravel/stone, and decorations before placing in your tank. You have no idea where the items have been.

Now, I don't make it a habit to buy my fish walmart, but I do check their tanks often. Sometimes I find "diamonds in the rough", and walk away with a good looking specimen. Its rare, but worth the short walk. Last night I picked up a nice "Yellow Lab", Labidochromis caeruleus, with blue highlights for 6 bucks.

You should have held the bag over your nuts "for protection" as you left.;-)

Dude, you crack me up. You actually entered into a battle of wits with a Walmart cashier? I would say the only excuse is you forgot where you were, but when you are in a WallyWorld, it's pretty hard to forget! :p

I guess it could have been worse, you could have LOST the battle! haha

I steer clear of the fish department at my local Wally World. I think they are on a once every other year cleaning program there.

    Nice find.

I usually do a quick walk-by also and find a rare gem from time to time. Found a really cool peacock with lots of blue highlights for about the same price. Actually one of my favorite fish...don't tell anyone it came from Wal-mart...

I'll try to remember to toss it over the force field next time I leave the store...

I'm just amazed you still have fish in your stores... we haven't had them here for 4 years now... Everyone is still trained on how to sell them tho...

But all the tiny fish Visa cards will be wiped! Fish don't like paying cash you know.

wow, brave man getting africans from Walmart. Africans are awesome! I've been keeping Africans for about a year now.

I've got two Africans right now in my 46 gallon tank.

I got one of these guys (forgot what they are called):

    and a Melanochromis auratus.

The melanochromis is the meanest sob ever. The 3rd fish in the tank is a pleco (cleanup crew!) and he chases him around though he is over 3 times his size! The purple striped guy isn't as aggressive but is still somewhat. I have tried to overstock the tank several times at about 4 or 5 Africans but they just end up dead and I am left with these two. They do not like roomates!

Lets start a rumor that everybody needs to hold their kids up over the sensors going in and out of Walmart.

I also glance at the fish at wally world when I go. I have only bought a couple gold fish there for the kids the one time.

I have 125gal Lake Malawi setup right now with around 35 fish. When I get back from my cruise I plan on setting up a 46gal bowfront in my bed room...still have not figured out which fish are going in it though.
