The subject title is a bit alarmist (although it's been mentioned here before), but I went to the Union City one earlier today and they're no longer carrying ammo. Same thing with the Fremont store. I managed to make it to Milpitas and scoop up the rest of their 9mm inventory (it sounds like I'm hogging, but trust me, there wasn't much left to begin with - no WWB 115 gr. to be seen).

The clerk at the Union City store specifically mentioned they're no longer carrying ammunition. Looks like the good days of cheap(er) local supply are over. Time for me to bulk order online, but I assume the shipping charges are going to get me.

Maybe some of you Bay Area folks want to make a large order somewhere? I wonder if that would save anything though.

I just wonder what Wal-Mart's rationale is for suspending local ammo sales. I tend to not shop at Wal-Mart for anything BUT ammo, so I guess I won't be going there much anymore, if at all.

They clearly still sell ammo in other locations--but not in our part of Northern California.

Wal-Mart is in a real dogfight over the town of Hercules, CA trying to purchase some land using imminent domain Wal-Mart purchased not long ago to build a store there. I suspect that this is one small way that the company is pandering to local liberal, anti-gun politics in order to build up more political capital. I know many people who believe Wal-Mart to be the corporate version of the devil himself and who will absolutely not shop there.

Whatever it is, we can be sure the motive is ultimately about the bottom line.

In an email posted on another forum, Wal Mart tried to explain why some stores are no longer carying ammunition or in some cases guns. They said it had to do with the amount of sales of these items versus other items. I think that could read to mean that if they are not getting lots of demand for ammunition because the area is strongly anti-gun then they plan to spend the money for other items.

If you live in one of these areas then buy all the ammunition you can while you can. Then go out and vote the anti-gun politician's out of office. We need to make their position on gun control the primary reason to vote for or against them & forget which party they belong to. I am not weilling to get a $2000 tax break if I have to wait for the police to come & fill an after incident report. The Supreme Court has ruled that police are not required to protect a persons individual safety.

Although gun ownership is important to me, I couldn't use it as the single issue to cast a vote on politicians. Besides, they're all crooks to me anyway.

Anyone know a second source in the Bay Area (preferably East / South Bay) that sells ammo cheap? I want to support my local shooting range, but I also want to be able to practice more too. Sounds like Trader's in San Leandro might be closing. Not sure how their prices were to begin with.

Is Mountain View in the Bay Area? I bought a sh*tload of ammo at Wal-mart yesterday, and I was assured by a very knowledgable employee (older guy and a shooter) that they will continue to stock ammo. In fact, he apologized for the way that the counter is set up, and said that they'd be redoing the entire display so that you could actually see what they have in stock, instead of leaning over the counter trying to catch a glimpse.

Did he call you "boss"? Last Friday when I talked to him, he also said that he's hoping stock some 9mm HP as well...once all the mess in that store is sorted out.

I read this so I decided to make a trip to Mountain View (from Redwood City) on my lunch break. When I got there, yeah, they had this mess going on and they were all out of 9mm. I didn't ask about others though. Looks like they were redoing the entire display shelf; makes worried as it almost looks like they're making room for something else instead. The guy behind the counter said they should get more 9mm within a couple of days.

    I really hope so...

What is the world coming to when we lament a loss of selection at Wal Mart?

    Forgetaboutit.

I just went to the double dark side and ordered a bunch of CCI Blazer online from this outfit http://www.outdoormarksman.com/buyammo.php

1000 rounds of CCI Blazer 9mm, 115gr FMJ for $126 shipped.

Where else do folks go for good deals on ammo in the SF Bay Area?

I am not a reloader and do not have plans to do so as of yet--though I am giving it more thought. Also, I do not shoot larger calibers and am very strapped for time, making the reloading learning curve and ongoing process of actually reloading time-prohibitive. I never thought I'd say this, but as financially limited as I am, I actually have more money than I do time.

Incidentally Trader's Sports in San Leandro is in a world of trouble right now, and I can't recall if their ammo is inexpensive or not. That place may close soon. The ATF says that a disproportionate number of firearms involved in Oakland's out-of-control murder rate are all from Traders. That's not exactly great PR for gun ownership, but it is also alleged that Trader's does not have records for a great number of guns they have sold over the last several years. And if you're a gun owner or dealer here in Norcal, you'd better dot your i's and cross your t's.

I'm getting a little more paranoid now that I hear about that new CA bill being looked over. Just to put things into perspective, and assuming WWB 115 gr. FMJ and Wal-Mart's pricing for a box of 100 is fixed at $11.98, whereas other local stores average (estimated round figure) $15:

If you go shooting once a week and shoot 100 rounds per visit (5200 rounds annually):

    Wal-Mart: $11.98 x 52 visits a year = $622.96
    Other: $15.00 x 52 visits a year = $780.00
Difference of about $157.00, or about 13 boxes of 100 at Wal-Mart

If you go shooting twice a week and shoot 100 rounds per visit (10400 rounds annually):

    Wal-Mart: $11.98 x 104 visits a year = $1245.92
    Other: $15.00 x 104 visits a year = $1560.00
Difference of about $314.00, or about 26 boxes of 100 at Wal-Mart

This doesn't factor in sales tax, of course. But wow, the difference in ammo quantity / potential extra practice adds up quick. This is assuming I'm performing simple arithmetic correctly.

No, that's very good arithmetic and it's very well presented.

I am the kind of person who likes to support the local guy who gives better service at the expense of higher prices--but not for ammo.

This is my first experience with online ammo purchases, so we'll see how it turns out. I do not particularly enjoy Walmart's shopping experience and the one where I used to go (Martinez) wasn't really in my neighborhood, anyway, so it's not like I'm really singing the blues on the demise of its ammo sales. I will find some other options.

Hey, I wonder what a similar artithmetic demonstration would like like if one RELOADED ammo, assuming start-up costs for a modestly-priced machine and other related supplies and accessories.

Yup, I've already e-mailed the Governor and my two local district reps. Hopefully their staff will do more than just give it a passing glance and throw it in the "to-be-read-later" pile. I'm no "gun nut," but I sure as hell need to practice. If my range time today were any indication, I'm going to need lots of it.

I called San Leandro Wal-Mart and they're no longer carrying ammo. I did stop by the Milpitas one again and they still had stock. I collected the last few boxes of Remington 9mm 115 gr. JHP. Some of y'all greedy bastards takin' all my WWB, eh?

I've always liked Seattle! Hows Oregon living? I worked full time, go to college fulltime so I figure I have three years till I get my degree! After that bobsmyuncle maybe movin out of the Bay Area! Wow, I wonder how will it be in three years. Some of my friends who found out I liked guns have always semi harrased me about it. I tell them I liked them, and I shoot IPSC/USPSA. That's my only motive for having them! I explain this is why I buy ammo in bulk.

In any case this thread had me all worried! Hows the sacramento Area walmart? I don't mine going that far, altho I would be buying alot more to make up for the gas. 200lb of ammo on my trunk!

BTW: Anyone here bought ammo from a gun show! Cuz Crossroads Gun show will be in town in Sep 23 - 24 at the cow palace. Or if you cant wait that long Del Mar, CA on the 15th - 16th. I don't know where Del Mar is so is it close to BA?
