Here's a new one. Went to Target today. Needed a bunch of odds and ends. My dad asked me to pick him up a bottle of Dayquil. Got to the checklane and the checker asked for ID - You're supposed to be 18 - I'm in my mid-40s, but 100 percent check isn't that unusual here. No, she wants to scan it in to the computer and tells me it's "State Law." She got kind of snippy, so I told her, "I know it's not your fault, but if you work for Nazi's, people will think you're a storm trooper." I left over $100 worth of stuff on the counter and walked out.

Went over to Fred Meyer, where the checker simply commented that I "looked 18" and went on - the computer did flash for an ID check.

Has anybody else had this problem?

Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide is your answer. AKA DXM. Some people drink it to get "high". Source: My wife...

Edit: Some variations of Dayquil include Pseudoephedrine.

In Louisiana, they do ID scans to purchase anything with Pseudoephedrine... because 20 tabs of Claritin-D will supply a meth lab indefinitely, or something.

"skittles." kids pop the pill form in schools because apparently high school is so hard nowadays you need to be drugged out all day.

I know what's in it - it doesn't matter if some people drink it to get high - if it's dangerous or abusable, they need to add it to Schedule IV - not "scan you into the computer." I'll point out that this clearly isn't a law - but a company policy - even though the smocktards claimed it was state law.

Are you sure? I know in Oregon you have to have a Scrip to buy many cold meds. And WA was thinking about passing the same type of law.

Could it be a county law?

My 42 year old wife was bitchin' today that at Target they wanted to swipe her DL to buy a bottle of wine.
She told them to keep the wine, the $128 worth of other items, and she wouldn't be shopping there any longer.
If they what to see your ID fine, but there is no reason to swipe or scan an ID to purchase legally sold items..:(

    Actually there is.

It's easy to fake the front of the DL. Faking the mag strip is a bit more complicated.

And I assume she was going to pay cash?

No, Washington does not have that - if it did, my wife could write one.

I have left $300 worth of stuff at wal-mart before because they would not sell me a bottle of wine while my under 21 GF was with me. I get super pissed off when this happens due to the fact that it takes an hour and a half to pick all that crap out. I have tried to explain that there is no difference in this and if she was with her mother but they dont see it my way. Another time this happened I told my GF to walk ten feet away so she was not "with" me and the pissed off clerk did give me my booze. So F Wal-Mart!

So what? It's not like we're buying high explosives here - we're buying legally obtainable items. The purpose of the ID check is for age, great - I can guarantee that at 45, I don't look anything close to being 18 or 21.
