Quote from story:
"If you look at the picture of the gun closely, you can see cracks in the grip. I find it odd how all the internal components came out of the gun. If what we are seeing is what actually flew off and hit the shooter in the head. For all we know, Weapon Worx may have picked up the pieces and stuck them back together for this picture."
Interesting comments at the bottom of the blog post.
Thanks for sharing, something to look into. Would like to get more information on the ammo before coming to any conclusions. The shooter was lucky that's all that happened.
I will echo the already mentioned--handloading ammo with reckless abandon to procedure often nets these kinds of results...I do not believe for one second factory ammo from a known company caused this...possibly JimBob and Steves's Gun Show Reloads
The owner should be grateful he isn't crippled or dead...Springfield built a platform that can handle that without ill-effect to the shooter! Impressive to say the least...
As for the shooter in this case, maybe it is time to take up Golf?
I wonder if the "owner" of this gun, who has been "shooting for 40 years" has a large collection of "Blowed Up Guns" and has taken many hits to his head over the years.
Can't tell by picture but I wonder if second shot after squib. Text says two mags then third mag when kaboom. So I wonder if squib that shooter assumed was empty so swapped mags, cycled slide and shot.
This was first posted on my FB page. I've talked with the op and he's clueless except it was old ammo he was trying to use up. No projectile in the barrel but there is the front portion of the casing still in the chamber. What gets me is the slide flew off the frame went backwards and hit him in the head. He has not contacted SA yet but should on Monday. Dang wonder he wasn't badly injured! I think there is something more to this that he's letting on. Pistol was one year old with only 100 rounds. It's upgraded as you can see the arm on the GS in one pic. When I learn more I'll come back and let everyone know.
it's really hard to believe he has a hand unscathed, mainly bc the rear grip safety blew apart and contorted in such a way it would've had to have got his hand some to. I just don't see anyway around a hand injury at least. that polymer is gnarled in the rear
If part of the case is still in the chamber, my money is on a double-charge rupturing the case and blowing all the gas down into the frame. If you can get that headstamp pic, it will confirm it.
And even though this is an ammo issue, almost assuredly, how much do you want to bet that SA will give him a new gun anyway? Legendary customer service.

They should, but they won't. I saw this on another forum with an xd. Squib load from range reloads, inexperienced shooter, then a ruptured barrel and blown up pistol and he got a new one. It really did a fine job of not hurting the shooters hand though. It was clear that the xd.45 service model is a little tank. Well designed piece. Thanks, Croatia!
On a related note, something I found out was that H&K has designed and tested all of their pistols to handle a full power load striking a squib in the barrel, and not blow up. Tons of engineering, the highest-grade materials, and more stringent testing than anyone in the industry. That's why they're so expensive. There's actually video out there of H&K engineers firing through a squib! With their hands! Not a mechanical rest. That's confidence in their product!
I'm no H&K fanboi (I only own a vp9) but that's impressive stuff.
It's rare, but their has been double charged factory ammo.
Another more common occurrence is too much setback say on a hot +P load.
I've seen them pressed in from poor shipping methods.
