I saw a Springfield GI 1911 A1 at the gun shop when i bought my XD. I am thinking about buying it but i wanted some reviews (pros..cons) on the gun first. It was stickered at $699. Can the low profile sights be changed out? I would like to saty at the $700 mark or less. Any info will help....Thanks.

I think it's a okay starter 1911 that can be built to your specs. Mine has some sloppy barrel lock up but over all that is it. Yes, the sight can be changed but you will have to pay for the front sight to get a dovetail cut to install a better front sight.

Severely, SEVERELY, overpriced @ 699, it's a ~$500 gun at best...it's about as stripped down and featureless as one can possibly get on the 1911 platform. I own one and it's a quality weapon, I'm just sayin....

Do you have any links for around $500? I could buy it online and have it shipped to a local FFL.

You should take a look at the Milspec before you make your final decision.

I JUST got one of these a week ago for $519 (really, $509 because the $10 background check was included). It seems like a good STARTER 1911, but it really is no-frills. I've got 100 rounds through it and had one FTFeed on the last round of my first mag through it, but no problems with the other 93 rounds.

I like it so far, but like what has been said, it is the BASIC package. $699 seems to be at least $150 too much. For $699 you should be able to get a MilSpec or for another $150 get into the Loaded line.

Here's my new MilSpec and my XD(m) 9:

Dr tatu and VR4....im looking at the 1911 A1 stainless. Not the Black GI model.....Is 699$ still overpriced for the stainless one like the pic i posted? I saw the Black GI model for about $550 but i want the stainless one.

Ehhh, the G.I. is just way too basic for that price. Look into a milspec and see if you can find a cheaper price online. I had a choice between the xd45 and the G.I model...while I wanted a 1911,..I thought the xd45 was a better gun for a better price.

To much money take the advice and buy the Mil-Spec. Of course the choice is yours but for that much money I would definetly go with the mil-Spec not sure but you may even get a Mil-Spec Stainless for that price.

I have that same pistol in stainless and have been shooting it for 6 years now.

Bottom line: its very good for such a basic 1911. It will hang in there with both of my Colts and required ALOT less work to make it reliable. In fact, it has been totally reliable.

The one you're looking at is way overpriced, but if you find one in its proper price range...its a very worthy pistol. I have been shocked at how good the GI shoots. My Kimber TLE will out-group the GI but not by leaps and bounds. The Springer GI is surprisingly accurate for a basic 1911.

Yes, you can change the sights very easily and cheaply. Call Springfield and they will sell you the 3-dot "Mil-Spec" sights for about 30 bucks. They fit right on the GI slide with no major alterations and are a real improvement. You CAN spend more on sights....but you do not have to. The dinky GI sight problem is fixable for under 100 bucks.

If it appeals to you...go for it. Like I said, I have two Colts and a Kimber and the plain GI hangs in there with these more expensive pistols and is one I'd never get rid of. I don't ditch 1911s that are 100% reliable.

If your looking for a good basic 11 to get wet with look at the RIA tactical. Has more options than a Mil-Spec or GI and is a hell of a gun!! Buy what you wish all are fine weapons......happy hunting
