Hey guys, quick question from a noob.
I want to be able to practice a bit without blowing through tons of ammo, so I'm trying to find a safe way to dry fire without damaging my XD40. Will the 5.11 training barrel accomplish this or should I get snap caps? Is one better than the other? Or should I get both?

Get some snap caps. They're good for dry-firing, and also for other things such as "surprise loading" in a mag of live rounds to check your trigger pull. You definitely should have some on hand.

You can also dry-fire without snap caps, but it's probably better to use them.

Yes, snap caps give you more flexibility in training.

Snap caps or better for dry firing. The training barrel is better if you are doing some hand to hand training and are practicing weapon manipulation/retention. The training barrel lets everyone easily see that the weapon is safe.

ok i'm going to buy a 5 pack os snap caps from opticsplanet.com

Does anyone know which brand is better, A-ZOOM or Tipton? A-zoom appear to be made of metal while the tipton ones look like plastic...

    You don't need either.

you dont need it for dry firing, they are great to practice malfunction clearing and testing feeding and extraction

My A-Zoom snap caps have worked well for me (yes, they're made of metal) but I've never tried Tipton.

I recently bought the A-Zoom brand snap caps, and based my decision on the feedback of customers who had used the plastic versions and didn't get the service out of them that they had anticipated.

I like the dummy rounds that LETARGETS.COM sells.

Nickel case with an orange plastic bullet. IMHO, better than the springloaded ones that can break at the tip.
