I've been trying to do some research on slugs for my 590A1. From the Mossberg site, it's cylinder bore.

Is cylinder bore the same as smooth bore? Can you shoot rifle slugs through a cylinder/smooth bore? I see some references on manufacturers sites that some rifled slugs are designed specifically for rifled barrels but can also be used in smooth bore barrels.

    Thanks.

I've put all types and varieties of slugs through my 590, and never had an issue.

Great post! I'll have to get me some rifled slugs and see how they do through my Mossberg 590.

I've run rifled slugs only through my 590 and it's run great. Definitely wakes your shoulder up!

    Worse than 3" buckshot?

For years I had only been shooting birdshot for trap/skeet. Then I bought a box of 3" Federal Vital-Shok 00 Buck to test my new Mossberg. That was some strong stuff, and a big surprise to me.

My hat is off to anybody that shoots 3 1/2" buckshot shells.

No just 2 3/4" slugs. Its just when you put down the AR and pick the 590 up the first round is a shock. Once I learned to really man handle the 12 gauge we got along fine.

I shoot slugs out of my 590 18.5" barrel a lot. Dead on out to ~100 yards.

I have put a Knoxx Compstock stock on it. Makes a big difference on felt recoil.

There are some reduced recoil 00 buck rounds that are excellent for SD/HD uses. Federal Flightcontrol 00 is also great for SD/HD as well has hunting. They keep a nice tight pattern out to 25 yard and beyond.

    I haven't shot any 3" shells. 2 3/4" do just fine.

I just put some slugs through my 18.5" 870 for the first time today. Used both Winchester and Federal, all 2 3/4 inch rifled. Holy Moe! Even with a Knoxx recoil-reducing stock, you definitely feel them. They seemed pretty accurate at 25 yards. Trigger discipline is pretty tough when you know what's coming. You really just want to pull it and get it over with!

Yeah I throw a reddot on my mossberg during deer season. It's sighted at 65 yds and seems to do pretty darn good even using the cheap 15rd valuepack Remington slugs. Does kick but I usually shoot 200+ birdshot shells a week so i don't really notice it unless i'm holding it wrong. A good recoil pad does help though

I make my own 1oz slugs. Shoots great! I can hit out to 100 yards...but its a blast to shoot out to 50 yards...I only got to paper the loads at 40 yards so far but its a clover group so Im happy with it. Besides, @ 0.24 per round, whats not to like?! :)

Any non-sabot slug will work out of your 590; as to which it prefers, you'll need to buy several varieties and see which works best. My 20" 500 smoothbore/cylinder likes the el-cheapo Winchester 2.75" rifled; my 28" Benelli M1S90 with a cylinder choke tube prefers 3" Brenneke Blitz. Your shotgun may like soemthing completely different.

    I've fired 10ga magnum buckshot, 3.5", 18 pellet out of a single-shot, full-choked H&R...

That'll wake you up in the morning.
