During the Depression a collection of poor but hardworking people used the railway system to transited the country seeking work. These folks, called Hobo's formed a loose community of rail riders. They developed a system of communication using symbols providing information, safe routes and warnings. Chalked in a visible locations, these codes let those later following with a means to navigate the community, locate resources and avoid dangers. One of these symbols in particular caught my fancy.

To complete the de-Glock project one of the few remaining stock parts was replaced. I order a couple of alloy slide plate covers etched with the Hobo code for "man with gun." It's an interesting symbol created from the point of view of the Hobo, telling others the safe and appropriate response when confronted by a man with gun.

I know this kind of stuff isn't for everyone. I thought it was an interesting historical tidbit from an era of tough times for a nomadic group of folks struggling to survive.

I think I'll use some of them in my posts. Some really hit home. Cool!

I've never even heard of this before. So, would they carve, write, scrawl these symbols on walls and trees and stuff?

I'm actually intrigued enough to read some more on the subject.
