    I'm posting this in part as a response to another thread, but these are great fundamentals for everyone - especially those of you less skilled in trigonometry (similar triangles theory).

    If your pistol shoots right then adjust your sights to the left, if left then shift right. For a precise adjustment, use the following procedure:

    1. Y - Determine and record your sight-in distance (25 yards is typical)
    2. d - Measure and record the distance between the front sight post and the rear sight aperature (about 6.6875 inches for the XDm 4.5)
    3. s - Measure and record the distance from the slide face to the right edge of the rear sight aperature (mine was 0.110 inches).
    4. Fire a 3 or 5 round group to locate the center of your group. The group center distance "g" inches right from center will be used to adjust your sights.

    The equation you will use to determine the new right-hand distance of the rear sight is:

    [IMG]
    { New s, in inches = s + g * [ d / (36 * Y) ] }

    Just adjust the previous windage value (s) to the new distance, fire to check your adjustment, and repeat as necessary. If the group is left of center, replace the plus sign with a minus sign.

    A similar procedure can be performed to adjust your front sight post for range, but this requires grinding, shimming, and a little LockTite. You would lower the front sight to raise your shot and grind/shim the sight to lower your shots. The shim or shave value for the front sight would then be the above equation without the "s +" component, but shave in small increments with gloves on to prevent ruining your sight.

    Hope this helps!

    For the equation to work properly, Y needs to be in yards; the other two variables are in inches.

    Thanks! :cool:

    Match quality promises precision (tight groups). It's your job to provide the accuracy with good zeros and strong fundamentals.

    Unless you are talking about adjusting the front sight, then you have it backwards.

    Good catch, I fixed it. It always helps me out if I draw a little diagram on the range...

    I was thinking about my Advantage Tactical Sights when I wrote this, sorry about the confusion. I usually shoot with my buddies and I compete against myself.

    I made a few diagrams to clear things up a bit. Hope it helps.

    Man, that sucks that your targets are all backwards. Maybe you can sue your printer.
