A lot of people have posted a lot of topics on self defense ammo. I've had some time off and decided to see just what my XD-9 is capable of doing with the right ammo. I was not going to publish any of this stuff but recenty decided to share my findings with the community.

Scoot on over to Frag.110mb.com and have a look at some of the pictures it might help you pick a good Self Defence round, or not ;)

    Hope y'all enjoy

    BTW: I welcome comments...

Thanks. Even though it's been discussed a lot I always like to see it again. I think those pictures are some of the best.

great. very informative, and it made me feel better about my relatively uninformed choice of speer gold dots...that remington ammo looks cool as well!

Excellent! Can't wait to see more. I would like to see the Winchester Ranger 147gr which I carry. I like the heavy bullets.

Very professionally done. Thanks for sharing. Hope you don't mind if I steal your pics for my photo file on expanded bullets.

Thanks for all the hard work Fraggle.

I was just curious about felt recoil between the lighter rounds and the 147.

I am just waiting to pick up my XD 9 SC and wanted a good defensive round that is also easy to control.

I'm glad you enjoy it, I'll be posting the denim test results as soon as I get them all done and written up. That should be interesting.

Felt recoil was not a big deal to me. There is a lot of literature on how +P+ loads feel like a 40 but while you are shooting it's marginal at best. One of guys at the local shop has arthritis and so I got him a DGR with 22lbs spring which fixed him up just right. The 22 pounder took just enough edge off the recoil for him to enjoy shooting again. He smiles every time I walk in there ;)

Now something else to consider is velocity. With the Sub-Compact the bullet runs out of barrel length quick. Most of today's modern rounds will expand just find out of a 3" barrel. But just in case you might want to consider a +P load to achieve proper expansion velocity.

amishclark I'm glad it helped you feel better, that was the whole point of sharing my findings and I'm happy I did. You can't go wrong with the GoldDots they are just awesome.

    Thanks

I agree! today's modern heavy 9mm bullets are just as good as any +P and they have the size advantage. The HST 147gr I tested hit hard penetrated perfectly (no over penetration) and expanded beautifully. As for the Ranger T those petals "Talons" are scary on the 127gr, I would hate to think of how much worse they can get on a 147gr (might cover a quarter).

    Thanks Alaskapopo,
As for the pictures you can have them with my blessing. If they help you in any way than I'm glad I posted them. I have some more photos I haven't had the time to put up yet. They are close ups of the recovered samples from other angles. I should have them posted on the site within a few days.
