scraping sounds after brake/rotor change

    I put new front rotors & brake pads on my civic yesterday due to the rotors being warped & wearing the old pads down uneven....

    Well, it brakes GREAT now.. but when driving in a straight line at speeds anywhere from 60.... to just rolling really slow in the driveway, I get a scraping sound from the left front tire.. Like the pad's are rubbing on the rotor... doesnt do it ALL the time.. but for the most part, while I drive it, it's making that sound.

    What could this be? Didnt do it before I put new pads/rotors on.

    The caliper could be sticking...

    Maybe the pad is contacting the rotor. If that's the case it'll wear down and stop.

    How do I get the caliper to stop sticking if thats the case..

    And if I just let it wear down & stop, will that hurt the life of the pad?

    If it's the caliper sticking you'll need to replace it. How much have you driven since you changed the brakes?

    A lot of aftermarket brake pads have a thin piece of soft metal glued to the backside of them. This is to help prevent a 'click' noise as the caliper begins to sqeeze the pads. I've had many of these come loose either during installation or down the road and wedge themselves between the caliper and rotor, which oviously makes a scraping sound. Something to check out. After awhile I just started removing them from the pads prior to installation, they're really unnecessary anyway.

    Your pads are lightly rubbing. Also, they may not have bled the brakes right either.

    right after i changed them, I had to run errands, so I drove about 70-80 miles... but didnt notice it because of the radio until I got closer to home and turned it down...
    Today, I havent drove at all except up and down my road to make sure it was coming from the tire.

    I bet it is the dust cover (backing plate) touching the rotor. It is easy to bend when trying to grab the steering knuckle to turn it. Look under the inside wheel and you should see the backing plate. Take a flat screwdriver and place it between the rotor and the plate and bend it back away from the rotor.

    Cannot tell you, as an ASE Certified Brake tech, how many times I have done this. It is embarrassing. :(

    Your anti-rattle clips that are on the caliper bracket may be rubbing against the rotor.... They are the little spring loaded clips that hold the pads on the caliper mounts.

    If its a light sound I would just drive it for a few more days and if it doesn't stop consider changing the caliper. Did you have trouble pressing the piston back in to make clearance for the new pads?

    If all he did was change pads and rotors he wouldn't need to bleed them..

    I didn't even think about that one... I guess I should leave this one to the break tech. :wink:

    Yeah, on the left one, it was a ***** to get on... the right side went on like a glove.

    Thanks for all the tips, Im going to check it out tomorrow for the plates & the dust cover

    That sounds like it does need a caliper...

    Definitely check the caliper, shims and pads then. It should have went on as easily as the right side.
