Got lucky and found one of these Ruger SR1911 at the local, family-owned sporting goods store. Added the Trijicon HD Night Lights last week. If one can find a Ruger SR1911, it is a good entry into the world of the 1911 pistol. For about $650, you get a pretty well-made, good-looking, smooth-shooting handgun. Relatively low-risk for those looking to get into 1911s. Now that I know I love the form factor, the easy handling, and the more-complicated-takedown-than-any-of-my-other-handguns, I want to buy other 1911s!

I wanna see them offer one for around 800 with checkering and factory night sights.

We all know they can do it.

Good looking pistols though. I likes them.

I really wanna see how far they'll expand this line.

ruger always screws up its marketing somewhere, always has maybe that rugers dead that will change but I expect not.

watch they make it 40 lpi :D when it needs to be 25 to appeal to the largest customer base..... 40 is useless

I still have yet to see one of these in person. None of my local shops can get one on the shelf. They order them for customers and have sold a quite a few, they are just never an in stock item. The next handgun I buy will be a 1911 and I will not spend more than $700. One of my local shops can order you one of the Rugers for $650 and I am a big fan of Ruger's (that's my Security Six in my avatar) but I don't know if i can bring myself to order a firearm I've never even handled.

By the way that is a fantastic looking gun and makes me envious.

I prefer stainless controls on a stainless gun, but that's still a great looking pistol. Love the Trijicon HDs too, just ordered a set from James for my xdsc.

I've got the Trijicon HD Night Sights on my XD(M) .45 ACP 4.5" barrel. They really help acquire sight picture and sight alignment in all lighting conditions.

The Trijicon Bright and Tough Night Sights are made for more models of handguns, but if the HD Night Sights are available for your handgun, I give a slight nod to those sights.

I have the Bright and Tough sights on both my Beretta handguns, and they are great sights, too. One could argue the rear Bright and Tough sights are nicer than the HD's rear sights. The HD front sight is a step forward, though.

The SR1911 shoots well. So far, only about 200 rounds through it - cheap FMJ stuff like Winchester WB Value Pack ($39.99/100 from Wal*Mart) and Herter's Select Brass ($19.99/50 from Cabela's). No jams, FTF, FTE, etc. Weapon shoots softly, accurately, and it is easy to clean up.

For cleaning, I use Slip 2000 Gun Cleaner on the outside of the barrel, guide rod, spring, etc.

I use Hoppe's #9 down the barrel with about a dozen strokes with bore brush. It gets swabbed out with patches.

I swab out the slide using Slip 2000 Gun Cleaner, then with Breakfree CLP.

The inside of the barrel gets a light coat of Slip 2000 Gun Lube.

Rails, other friction points also get Slip 2000 Gun Lube.

External parts all get wiped down with a clean cloth. If some residue is pesky, it gets CLP and a Q-Tip and another dry wipe down.

To finish it off, all exterior parts (including wood grips) get the Renaissance Wax Polish treatment. That stuff is pricey, but good.

I shoot the gun at least once a week, and I clean it after each session. Time consuming, but I like it that way.

Nice gun. Rugers are really solid performers.

If they asked my opinion (and they did as part of their outreach to customers) it is that they take their 1911, pull out any MIM parts, add checkering, hand fit it, ask $1200.00, and rake in the cash. Put them right against the nice Sig 1911's, Smith E series, just under the SA TRP's, but with zero MIM's. Also PRODUCE THEM FASTER!

You did good, those are nice 1911's.

I'd love to know more about Ruger's manufacturing and production capacity. From everything I've heard, their Redhawks and SR1911s are in short supply if not impossible to find. It has been that way since at least this summer. If they could have managed to increase production, I'm sure they would have. As it is, their inability to do so is costing them revenue - and probably helping out S&W (revolvers) and other 1911 manufacturers in the $650-$1,000 range.

I do think they would sell more 1911's if they could produce them, and I'm sure their internal conversations are based on what makes the most money increase first and that will likely be the gun that needs the least labor. You can find an LCP in every gun shop in America and everyone owns one and likely it is a very easy gun to make. So they are maximizing revenue by making it and similar guns. But if they want my opinion grow their market by going up in price point, they already own the lower middle of the market.

I bet they make it with the checkering if they ever fill all their orders, but until they why bother slowing down the production, they have obligations to their current product.

    Truth.

If that ever catches up, maybe we can see the line expand. I want a Commander size pistol...

Me, too. I'd buy another Ruger in Commander size - just like the Government size I have now - except maybe black grips.

I would hope that Ruger could add night sights and front strap checkering and keep it at around $1000. Kimber does with their TLE. It would be a very good move for Ruger. And if they'd put stainless controls on it, I'd probably buy one myself.
