    I've always wanted an AR, saw this one on sale and pulled the trigger.

    Any suggestions for optics and backup sights?

    Well the Troy backup sights that the SR556 comes with have never failed me, many people will suggest Magpul; I have no experience w/ that but it is my understanding that Magpul sights are budget friendly. EOTech sights work great, its what I run on mine!

    I run magpul sights. They are polymer and are easy on the budget. My rifle is just a shooter but if I was building a fighting rifle I would go with Troy or something similar. I couldn't justify the price though on mine. I also run a primary arms micro red dot. I really enjoy it and it holds up fine for a game gun.

    @ghost--scout Right away I found the Troy sights with tritium lamps, do want, but I'll probably buy Magpul for now so I can start shooting next week.

    I've always liked the Trijicon optics, had no idea they were so expensive. I might just shoot iron sights as a motivation to save.

    Picked up a set of Troy battlesights on eBay. Made an offer below the seller's price and accepted the counter offer.
    That will get it into a shootable configuration.

    I miss the ACOG I had on my M4 when I was in. It'd be nice if they made a 4x32 BAC without a BDC and w/ the LAPD reticle, or something very similar, because I really miss the utility of the ACOG and the fiber optic/tritium light combination.

    I would get an aimpoint micro t1 or some sort of aimpoint.

    That's a nice looking rifle. What's the actual going rate on these? I understand the normal SR556 is going for the list price on the 556E, so I would hope that this is significantly less expensive than that.

    List is $1369, I paid $972 ordering from galleryofguns.com. I called around and price to walk in and buy one from a local store was around $1100.

    Adding tritium Troy Battlesights bumped the price up around what a regular one would be without the tritium and with the big heavy quad-rail. Win-win IMHO.

    For optics, I'm looking at the AimPoint micro T-1 and Trijicon ACOG. (leaning heavily in the ACOG direction)

    SR556 with ACOG:

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVOv_QrTXk0"]Ruger SR556 with ACOG, slow fire - YouTube[/ame]

    it was super bright outside and being under a canopy - this was playing tricks with the camera's exposure meters so sorry 'bout that.
    I was shooting at a target 100 yards away and verifying each shot. All were very close to bullseye.

    Very happy with the ACOG performance, I can see why the military would use it.
