Just wondering what you guys think would be a good amount of ammo to have on hand for SHTF situations.

Carrying the extra weight of ammo could be a bad thing but you would not want to run out?

what do you guys think? I would run my .223 and .40 s&w. Both pretty light ammo.

Personally I believe when it comes to ammo you should buy it always in quantity as you get the best deal. Keeping a shtf amount really is not something you can account for. I am in grunt the USMC. We are issued 6 mags. If you need more than 180 rounds your in a bad situation for a mission. To be honest if your shooting more than 2 mags your in a bad situation.

If your talking PAW...if you have a FOB than you want as much as possible. There is no limiting amount. Seriously...load up as you can.

    In storage, if I'm bugging in, I have 2500 .45, 2000 5.56/.223, 600 9mm, 500 .40S&W, 5000 .22, and 150 410GA. If I had to bug, I'd probably carry 1000 .22 and my 94, 92F with 6 magazines + 250rds, and my AR with 12 mags+ 500 rds.

However, if I'm on foot, it's 500rds of .22 w/94, 92f with 3 mags, and AR w 7 mags and 210rds. If I have to use all that ammo, well, I'm in something deep. The sidearm might change as I become more operator with my FNP. I just know the 92/AR so well from being military.

Thousands upon thousands of rounds are only needed if you want to do plenty of post SHTF target practice, or are a big fan of covering fire.

I try and keep on hand 1000 rounds for most of my weapons. That dosnt mean I could take that if I had to bug out..but makes me feel better knowing I have if need be.
IN some cases thats easier than others 1000 22,s no problem..1000 12 gauge no thats a little tougher..1000 9 mm easy..1000 7.62,s not as easy..
keep what makes you feel safe.

It depends really. You can't travel with much at all if you are bugging out on foot so make sure you have some in more than one location.

Other than that I stock up just to weather periods of low supply (and hence super high prices) like after the election of 2008 and now though no one is talking about it by September this year you won't be able to buy any ammo or AR rifles again for 6 months as idiots freak out over the next election!

If your bugging in as much as possible right, and if traveling in a car as much as possible, traveling on foot as much as possible.

1000 per caliber is a good start.

I try to keep 1000 for each of my pistols ( 357 mag, .40 and .45), 1000 for my 6.8 a/r and 500 for my bolt guns (.308 and .243) Not to mention reloading supplies to make a thousand more of each caliber at any time.

Man i think this is the one millionth thread we've had on this you'd think we could get a dang sticky and stop having these threads every other week.

we personally have about 3k 9mm, some of that is for long term storage that is going up to the bug out location this weekend, that will leave us with about 500 factory rounds, 700 reloads, and 100 personal defense rounds (old rounds that where rotated out of service and we should probably shoot). we have another 2k worth of components, but we need more FMJ bullets, don't want just lead.

For 223 we have 30 loaded mags, and another 1k in ammo cans, one ammo can is headed to the BOL with 12 unloaded mags and another ammo can full of AR parts. That will leave us with 500 loose and 900 in mags (this is to serve my team as we convoy to the BOL). we want another 1000 at the BOL, we need to stock components for this and should load the loose ammo onto stripper clips.

For 308 we have 200 rounds, this rifle is ment for hunting larger game since the area my BOL is in is near some decent hunting grounds, 40 on hand, 160 at BOL, we want 500 total 100 on hand 400 at the BOL.

22lr we have 2k, either 1500 or 1600 at the BOL the rest on hand this is ment for smaller game, I'm not sure how much we want total. we only stock the CCI Mini Mag, I can't stand the other 22lr (federal, remington, etc.), it loads inconsistently in the 22's we have, and the CCI stuff works the best in all of our weapons.

    I have a few hundred 45 acp but i don't plan on carrying a 45, so I don't stock those for SHTF.

All Ammo that is at the BOL is in mylar bags a little bigger than a Capri sun, those hold 100 9mm, 60 223, and 20 308 each. those are packed in ammo cans.

thanks guys. I agree we should have a sticky on this or include it in a sticky.

I have been reloading my SHTF ammo lately. got about 300 .223 FMJ's so far.

One more round than the guy/guys shooting at you, so, thats one more round than whatever he/they might be carrying . . how much do you really suppose that is ???

1K rounds per weapon IS a good start, if you could not get ammo for a LONG TIME how much do you think you'd need then ??? I'd be looking toward the latter and maybe 5K per weapon would be smarter. It's not like the stuff goes bad . . and if you got it now, you'd be getting more for your money now, inflation, etc is coming, so better get as much as you can now regardless . . .

and shortages WILL be the name of the game if Obama get re-elected, no doubt about it whatsoever . .
