Can anyone tell me if the recoil spring on the xd .45 tactical is directional meaning does it matter which way it goes back on the guide rod?

It will probably work either way but I always put the closed coils towards the back of the barrel.

The small (larger diameter) retainer ring at the back of the guide rod just prior to the head works best with the closed end of the spring. The diagram in the manual shows a closed spring end at the back of the guide rod. The deep seat recessed into the muzzle guide area should keep an open ended spring centered on the guide rod.
