I plan on putting my S&W model 59 into semi-retirement, nothing wrong , but it is 40 years old.
    I just bought a MOD-2 9mm sub compact, haven't fired it yet.
I am looking for a full size for range only, caliber is not an issue question is what kind??
I have been tossing the idea of a MOD-2 Tactical to keep the same platform, or a Walther PPQ 5 in.
I even thought about a 1911 just because I have never owned one.
    Any thoughts from the experts??

I wonder if you could put the tactical slide on the sub compact grip that would be interesting. If it was me I would prefer matching platforms and uniform caliber to keep somewhat consistency for practice and self defence.

For just value, reliability and fun, my range pistol is the 9mm Ruger P89DC. Discontinued, you can find them used in most shops and online stores for about $250 at most. Built like a tank, takes any ammo without complaint, at 38 ounces gives you a nice stable platform.

I do see some logic in keeping the same firearm/grip pattern, so if price is not an issue, then the Springfield 5" tactical Mod 2 fits the bill.

"Range gun" to me means something that is fun to shoot but somewhat impractical to carry but also can work well as a home defense pistol.

    • XD Tactical 5.25" is a good one due to the long sight radius.
    • A Rock Island Armory 1911 in 10mm is a hoot to shoot. Ammo's a little more $$ but the gun is $500-ish for a full size
    • If you want to plink on the cheap, maybe a Buckmark 22LR

Used Glock? I think if I was going range queen I would get that 1911 if price was no object. But that's just because it's on my wish list. Still can be found for reasonable prices

Get a 1911, everyone should have 1 in their collection. The PPQ is a really nice gun also. It has a nice trigger and great ergonomics.

I think Beretta makes a great range gun. I enjoy shooting them.

My XDM 5.25 has proven to be a great platform for range build. PRP trigger is a great start. What do you guys think?
