I currently have a Stag but I have been considering selling it and buyng a S&W. Any thoughts on if this is a step up or a lateral move? I guess it could be a step down as well. I would like opinions from anyone with insight into the two brands.

If I were buying new I'd go for the S&W personally - of the two you list.

If I already owned the Stag I'd just use it and replace anything you don't like.

If I were to sell, I would just sell the Stag upper and I'd build the upper I wanted (or buy the upper), not buy the S&W.

    (just my opinion though)

Doesn't the parts supplier for Stag also supply parts for the S&W AR's?

There was a time when Stag and SW shared the same parts, but that was short lived.

SW uses a milspec BCG, Stag doesn't...that's about the only difference. If it where me and I wanted to sell the Stag, I would get a BCM or for that matter put a BCM w/BCG on your Stag lower and call it a day.

I'm no authority, but I like my S&W. I don't know if Stag uses M4 feed ramps, but mine has had 800+ rounds, w/ zero feed issues, so I'm happy.

But if you just want a new/different rifle - then get what you want.

Stags have no M4 feed ramps. This led to a lot of problems on the one Stag I have owned, a 6.8SPC model 5H. It could not feed more than 4 rounds in a row without a failure to feed. It didn't matter what ammo or magazine, tweaked or not, I tried. I eventually ditched it for an upper from AR Performance, a 6.8SPC specialty shop.
