So I grew up shooting rifles and always shooting with my non-dominant eye closed. Last year I started really getting into pistols. I carried over the practice of only using my dominant eye when taking aim. I realize that if I was in a self defense situation that this is not optimal. I tried openning both eyes at the range today and it was freaking blurry.

    1. How do you shoot?

    2. What was the best advice you got for shooting with both eyes open?

    Yes, 2 eyes open.

You just have to train your brain to do it. Remember, really concentrate on the front sight.

Both eyes open, focus on the front sight.

You might to ease into it, squint your non dom eye for awhile until you get used to it. Practice, Practice.

I'm in the same boat right now. Just recently tried it at the range and it was really hard to see straight. I don't know if the low lighting on the indoor range had an effect on it or not but either way I need way more practice

I know I need to use both eyes, but it's just really hard to get the red dot (or whatever you are shooting at) aligned with your sight, due to the double vision!

Shoot with the image that puts you on target.

It's a real b!tch to shoot left/weak handed. Using my dominant right eye, I get that weird torquing to the right recoil. I started trying to use my left, non-dominant eye... hard to do, but worked... too much concentration required, though. As an added bonus, I usually try to wrap my right thumb behind the danged slide at first, and get bitten! I definitely need more weak-handed shooting practice, but it's not fun!

I'm far sighted in one eye & near sighted in the other eye. What should I do?? I've tried to shoot both eyes open with & w/o my glasses & can barely hit target at all.

I wear progressive glasses when I drive and x2.50 or so cheap glasses for reading, but I just use yellow-tinted safety glasses to shoot. The rear sight is fuzzy and the front one is okay. After a couple of shots, I try to keep pointing with the same picture, but focusing on the target and correcting aim. I shoot fast and point a lot. I don't spend a lot of time "aiming" and I'm not looking for tiny groups at 15 yards. I'm happy with fist-sized groups at 7 yards... with the targets not shooting back.

Definitely lots of rounds downrange and focus on the front sight as it's been mentioned before. I shoot with both eyes open.

If you shoot with one eye, then you're only focused on the sights of you're gun (rifle or handgun) and when the gun recoils then with the single eye it takes longer to re-find you're target.

When you have both eyes open the one eye is looking at the sights or optics, and the other eye is focused on the target in the distance. when you shoot like that, you'll be amazed (especially when shooting a rifle through a scope) how fast you'll be ale to get back on target after the recoil.

Two eyes is the way to go.

Years ago I saw a close-up photograph of Bill McMillan, (one of the best bullseye shooters of all time) on the 50 yard line. He had only ONE eye open. That's good enough for me.

I guess if you only want bulleye's thats great but in self defense it kills your field of vision also I want to compete in practical shooting so both eyes open will help me get back on target faster. I just got to learn how to focus better.

I am right handed, but left eye dominant.
Try sighting with one side focused and then the other eye focused, but both eyes open and see which gives the best outcome.
    The results may suprise you.

You need to learn to point and shoot without using the sights. This is how seals and dod are trained. Its take adopt a lot of practice. You need your peripheral vision and the threat awareness it brings in a defense situation.

I was left eye dominant right handed I forced right eye dominant so when I shoot with both eyes open I get two sets of rear sights and if I align the rear sights on the left sights I can hit fairly well but after a magazine (tops) it gives me a headache...so I do one eye closed
