Saiga makes a really nice, affordable AK. My buddy has one and it is a blast to shoot!

Sub'd as I'm considering an AK as well.

    Thoughts on Century and IO?

Century had quality control issues for a while. They all went 'bang' but had issues with canted sights and gas blocks - especially on the WASR rifles.

Saiga is the best factory AK out their right now. Arsenal and Krebs uses them as the base for their rifles. It will require a little bit of conversion (cheap) to get it to "look" more like an AK. Getting the forend to look like an AK, though is a bit more difficult.

If the classic look of an AK is important, then I'd go with a Romanian G or AKM rifle. They are not necessarily pretty, but they are crazy reliable. The Yugo's are excellent, too, but lack a chrome lined barrel. It might be worth it to go to a gunshow, look for a used AK on sale for a reasonable price ($400 or so), check for cant and check that it passes the bullet test. If so, you'll probably be getting a good AK.

Avoid Ohio Ordnance receivers or anything from Hesse/Vulcan. Hesse/Vulcan especially, they weren't sufficiently heat-treated.

    Arsenal

You are going to pay every bit of that $800 for a new one, and perhaps a little more. But I guarantee you it is worth it.

If you're looking for a good quality relatively cheap AK look at the Interarms from Atlantic Firearms. Very good quality for the money, much better than Century's and IO's.

If you don't mind a little shop time and the $150 or so bucks to convert it, go with the Saiga. Brand new, Russian made AK47.
The cost goes up about $100 to get the for end to the AK specs. I left my factory forend on and added vents.
IMO, if I'm going to buy on the grid, and I can afford it, buy new.

I've also read and seen a number of good reports on Arsenal. Seem to be well made Russian built AKs and that included optics mount is a good feature. An SGL21 is definitely in my future!

You will not regret it, its reliable as an AK should be, shoots great and very accurate for the round its firing.

Most of those will be WASR's and won't come with any of the extras that you would get online and for cheaper. Unless they have a killer deal you are better off finding a good FFL and order one online.

I'll be getting a CIA GP 1975 later this week. I'll make sure to give a full review on how I like it.
