    Hey all,
Here is my problem. I'm in the middle of my second year at my current apartment...and we've been hanging in there pretty good. We have a cheapo fridge (not sure what brand) but it looks pretty new.

Everything was fine for the first year...but for the last couple months all of our ice in our ice trays have been tasting like crap. I tried washing the trays..buying ice from the store and putting it in the freezer...sampling other freezer items...they're all starting to taste like crap. I can have day old ice cream that will taste nasty somehow from the freezer.

I haven't been hiding any bodies or anything in the freezer or keeping anything funky in there so why would it smell so bad? I've tried baking soda...it didn't seem to help.

Does anyone have any suggestions, ideas, or thoughts?

I really want to be able to use my freezer. I can't believe that it makes storebought ice get a bitter taste in only a day or two. The fridge appears to be unaffected, the freezer seems to be the only thing with issues.

    Please help me!

    :D

I did try baking soda and it didn't help. I'm beginning to suspect some other things:

    1. Bad smells from the fridge contents are getting into the freezer.
fix: I will check the fridge contents tonight.

    2. My fridge may be turned up too high therefore it is frosting too much?
    fix: turn down temperature.

You might want to defrost and clean both the freezer and fridge.

Really the only other thing I can think of. Is there any baking soda in the fridge?

Take everything out of the freezer and clean and defrost it. Then leave it open to air out and try more baking soda.

Lucy? You got some scrubbing to do!

    Defrost and scrub.

Do you have an ice/water thing in your freezer door? If the ice tastes funny I would think about checking for filters and/or replacing the water line to the fridge, but it sounds like you have a O/U freezer fridge combo. Freezer burn? Do you use ziploc bags like that finger in the old commercials told you to do?

You should try burning a candle in there, you know, the kind that smells good.

Oh yeah. I heard something about another cash for clunkers program, but its going to be about refridgerators. I need a new fridge too. Mine only has one foot, I have a bungee cord in there to hold the milk and stuff the door (the plastic thing that holds stuff in broke), My wife dropped a gallon of milk a few weeks ago and it broke right through the bottom shelf and the drawers in the bottom of the fridge. One day I'll shoot that thing...the fridge that is....

Defrost the entire fridge, scrub the whole thing down with some anti-bacterial cleaner (Bleach and water works), put new baking soda in the fridge and freezer.

    Here is your answer.

There is a pan on most refrigerators that sits above the compressor in the bottom of the fridge. When a freezer goes through a defrost cycle, the water drips onto this pan and evaporates. Sometimes the water dripping onto it can turn to a funk with a funky smell. This smell gets picked up and blown back into the freezer and over all your food. Clean the fridge and freezer, move it away from the wall and clean out this pan also.

Nasty pan - This is where you will find various nasty things like dead mice that have been tainting your food.

I found the nasty pan after a close call with a tornado years ago that left our power out for a week. Took us a couple days to find the smell.
