Last year i bought my first handgun. Its a xd9 tactical. Ive run around1300 rounds through it never having a problem. Accuracy has been improving. Expecting nicer weather soon i bought and installed a powder river trigger kit and dawson adjustable fiber optic sights. Accuracy greatly improved! Only downfall is how tall the front sight is (and sharp). I had been using a drop leg holster off ebay that i had got for around 15 bucks. It was a universal type holster fullll of velcro to adjust about everything. Belt holsters have just never appealed to me and i have never cared to conceal carry. Anyways getting to the good stuff... after installing the dawson sights and rendering my awesomly cheap holster useless i started looking for a new hard drop leg holster to accomodate the sights. It was either spend well over a hundred dollars or basically make one. I always love a challenge and after spending a summer laying fiberglass and reforming the fiberglass hood on my truck i decided why not a fiberglass one? Im going to do this in a few posts and havent used this site much so here goes...

First... to make a form. What better than the gun? I wrapped it with window insulating plastic and took my gfs blow dryer to it [IMG][/IMG]

Then i took masking tape to the whole thing to be able to bondo it. To form the top of the holster with a channel for the sight i taped empty 9mm cases between the sights down the top of the slide[IMG][/IMG]

the next step was to make it taper. being that it needs to slide in and out easily the inside of the holster needs to start narrow and get biggest at the mouth. to get that effect with the takedown lever and slide release my solution was to bondo the whole thing and sand it smooth. so that the fiberglass doesnt stick to the bondo use cooking spray or vegetable oil. be sure to use real bondo. i used bondo glazing stuff and it was a mistake because the pam soaked into it and getting to shell off was extremely difficult.[IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG]

Layer after layer it gets tougher and flexes less. The first couple of coats i did with it back on the gun because the heat caused by the fiberglass drying will warp it.[IMG][/IMG]

if you have never fiberglassed before you have to sand and make rough the fiberglass between coats and its best to let it dry overnight. do not do it in your house or an attached garage or the fumes will get to you.!
