Hopefully someone can help me with this...fired my Mosin Nagant using Herters steel case rounds and they kept getting stuck in the rifle, each one had to be pushed out with the cleaning rod...what is going on? Anyone know the cause? I was very disappointed!

Ejector looks fine and the bore was cleaned but I can certainly go back and clean it again.

Sounds like a dirty chamber to me and or there was lacquer coated ammo put through it ( common on steel cased ammo). Sounds like a good chamber cleaning is in order. While its not recommended, I used a 20ga brush with some oil on the end of my drill to clean out the chamber, just be careful and dont over do it and you should be fine.

Also, are you sure the rifle is 100% clear of cosmoline? Does your bolt stick at all?

If the extractor is in good shape, you should be able to practically beat on the bolt handle to extract a stuck case.

If the bolt is unlocking and coming back leaving a case stuck, you need a new extractor.

If you have sticky bolt syndrome, polishing the chamber will help, an in-depth steam cleaning of the chamber and the barrel thread area will help make sure you don't have any cosmoline contributing to the sticky bolt as well.

I use a wall paper steamer with a brass nipple on the hose to heat metal parts for cosmoline removal, and occasional deep cleaning of my mosins. Just be sure to clean and oil quickly when using VERY hot water vapor to clean metal parts.

I had a sticky bolt that was ripping casings upon extraction. I took a 12ga brush and attached it to a rod and a drill. I soaked the chamber in FireClean (Strongly recommend that stuff). THen fired up the drill. After that wore down the brush i switched to an AR chamber brush. Then touched it up with some Q-Tips and no more sticky bolt.

a good soak in 91% rubbing alcohol should strip cosmoline out of there.

I've had a few issues. i've had a bent extractor cause this (can take a picture when home) also be sure your headspace is correct. Cosmoline in the chamber is also pretty common. If you have cleaned it already, clean it again.

I had one that kept getting cases stuck and split. Turns out the headspacing was bad. You may want to get a headsapce gauge and check it.

Ok, so I cleaned my Mosin thoroughly, scrubbed her out and checked the extractor, which looks straight, and put everything back and it STILL binds up and will not close with either brass or steel shells...it feeds fine, but will not close on the shell, it stops just before and I can't lay the bolt over (stays pointed up at 12 oclock)...take out the shell and the bolt functions flawessly...might just get another one and try again...this is quite frustrating...any other ideas my friends??

It this is a headspace problem what's the cure for that?

Actually, I have that same issue when the gun heats up. It is either hard to lock in or hard to unlock. The unlocking has subsided since i cleaned out the chamber.

Bad head space is directly related to the bolt face. Some can be fixed by bending the groove and making sure its straight. And then very carefully filing a tiny bit (not recommended if you don't feel confident in your gunsmithing abilities) I would just replace the extractor. Please note however that there is no guarantee that your new bolt face will have good head space. All these parts are old. But at 15 bucks a pop, it isn't the end of the world. Also if you have another mosin, swap in the bolt assembly from that. This can help narrow down whether It's in the bolt or the chamber.

As for yours, yours sounds like a dirty chamber. As the cosmoline melts, it because a sticky mess in there.
