    Got a Ruger Mini-14 and have a bunch of mil spec 5.56 - I have seen the threads on AR-15s and not shooting the mil spec ammo due to the chamber and pressures.

    Question is how about the Mini-14 - same deal / good to go - or something else? Do I need commercial .223?

    Thanks

    The issue is the difference between .223 and 5.56 ammunition. Here's a good source of info:
    :: Ammo Oracle

    My understanding is that the Mini-14 is chambered for .223. (Is that how your rifle is marked?) If so, then technically you probably should not use 5.56 in it.

    I've seen a lot of people comment on forums that they've shot 5.56 in their Mini-14s without any problems . . . but I think that's a judgment call that you'll need to make.

    I have also read on the Ruger forums of guys shooting the .556 in the Mini 14 with no adverse effects.I have not fired anything but .223 Rem thru mine.

    I know people that have fired 100s of 5.56 rounds thru Mini 14s, and though they got away with it , it only takes once to ruin your whole day.
    IMHO it isn't worth the risk of having a 5.56 cartridge create a dangerously high pressure in a .223 chambered rifle.

    Ruger says in their owners manuals:
    "The Mini14 is designed to use EITHER U.S. Military, Commercial sporting, Or Other .223(5.56mm) caliber ammunition manufactured to U.S. industry standards."

    They've also responded to emails saying its fine. Send them one for yourself and save the response.

    However, my take is:
    How old is the mini-14? Very old models, or rifles with high or unknown round counts would be risky. But any modern example would be OK except for their target models that are only chambered for .223 Remington.
