As the title say I can't decide what optic to put on my AR. I have two style in mind ether some model of eotech with a 3x on a flip to side or a 1-4/6x30mm with a P.E.R.P style mount. The gun is mainly on the range but it will be used for things like coyotes and maybe deer and antelope. I would also like to shoot 3 gun if i find any comps in my area. What are some pros and cons of both styles that you guys have experienced?

Personally, I would not run a an EOTech and a magnifier....I had a PRO running in front of a 3x magnifier and the set-up lacks finesse.

I think most 1x RDS will work fine but I would put a 45 degree set of iron sights if you want to 3-gun it.

The only problem with 1-4xs, even though I like the set up better than RDS with magnifiers, is the weight. They can get hefty.

SO, in summation, you should buy/trade for my Aimpoint PRO ;)

I'm leaning more towards the 1x4/6. I have been looking at the Burris tacops 1-4x30mm in a P.E.R.P mount.

    And no thanks

Lol, it was worth a try. I knew it wouldn't be best for your needs though so I decided to address the rest of your question as well.

I've got the 1-4 on my new AR now and i like it alot so far with out shooting it. It will be a coyote gun and plinker as well. I used to have a spikes midlength with an aimpoint clone on it for a red dot. Took it a few times hunting and bagged a couple yotes and a fox with it on one outing. I think after that though i relized that i was just a bigger fan of having a scope on my rifle that im going to hunt with.

I think for your specified applications one of the new Nikon scopes in the M-223 line is perfect. Right now they have a rebate of $30 also so kind of hard to beat. I keep looking too and like the 2-8 X 32 the best so far, just haven't committed yet. I already have EoTech exps-2 and love it with the co-witnessed mbus from magpul.

I would like a bit more mag than the burris 1-4 X 24 that is on my .308 rifle now so I am kinda waiting a couple weeks until Nikon releases the new M-308 line of scopes.

The rebate is good until Oct 6, 2012 so I have plenty of time.

    Take a look.... Nikon 2-8x32 M-223 Riflescopes w/ Matte Nikoplex / BDC Reticle 8486 8487 FREE S&H NI-RS-M223-1-8487-KIT, 8486-KIT1, 8486, 8487. Nikon M-223 Rifle Scopes, Nikon Rifle Scopes.

I just really don't know what I want to do with it. I can't make up my mind. Way too many options.

maybe it's because that's all I ever used but I personally like iron sights or anything that doesn't require batteries.. it may sound dumb but the trijicon usmc issuse agoc is amazing in my mind

Don't try to cast your voodoo magic on me. Most uppers cost more then my full AR did.

If its just a little 556 AR then throw a low power scope on it or reddot with magnifier and call it a day.
If you are wanting a long range (200yd+) then get a decently powerful scope. I custom built my black rain billet 6.8spcII and cant really say its a tack driver at 200yds only because i havent tried yet but at 100yds it is and i run a 4-12x40 vortex viper.
I also have a billet dpms ar10 in .338federal and as useless as it might be but i run a 6.5-20x44PA vortex viper on it and i love the power it has! It will reach out a pretty good distance!

I think I will put a red dot with 3 or 4x on a flip to side mount. Now I just need to figure out which red dot or eotech. Ugh and once again so many options.

Go with your original idea of a1-4 or the newer 1-6s. The Eotech/magnifier combo is expensive, cumbersome and at least as heavy as a scope. I have a Burris MTAC on one of my ARs and everyone that has shot it has loved it. At anything under 100 yards it is nearly as good as a red dot but has no trouble ringing steel at 400 yards.
