How good of a deal is this...

I've been offered a Springfield Armory 1911 5" TRP, only fired at the factory, with bull barrel and adjustable night sights (not the full dust cover) model with 5 7-round magazines for $1150. It's from a buddy at work and he's in no hurry to sell and doesn't NEED the money, but has no interest in owning the pistol anymore. If I tell him "I'll take it", I'm sure he'll hold it for me until I can come up with the money. The problem is coming up with the money AND convincing the wife of the quality of the deal.

So, how good of a deal is this...really? What sets the TRP line of Springfield Armory 1911s apart from the Range officer line and any other competing line of 1911s in the $1500 price range? How much of an advantage (disadvantage) is the fitted bull barrel versus a bushing with standard barrel? I'd love the full dust cover model, but the best I've been able to find is about $350 more and it's just for looks rather than being functional. I just can't justify $350 for "because it looks cooler". Thanks for any info and insight you can provide.

The TRP is a very good 1911, they're hand fit with typically excellent triggers and they hold their value well. Sounds like the one you're looking at is black bull barrel no rail and 1150 is a good, not great price. It should look new at that price.

You're going to have some MIM parts but that's not the end of the world, if you ever have a problem SA will take good care of you.

I personally prefer a bushing to a bull barrel but that's just preference.

They're very good production 1911's, to beat one you'd need to go to a Dan Wesson or better and you'd spend more than the 1150 you're going to spend on the TRP.

I'd say get it. It will serve you well and there's nothing better than a good 1911.

@Snaphook , it does have the rail, but is not the full length dust cover model. It's the traditional length, partial dust cover, all black with the G10 black and white grips with fully adjustable night sights. My buddy said it is unfired by him and he is the original purchaser, so, basically, it is NIB. He said he paid close to $1600, so I'm sure he paid close to full retail, but did it during a gear up sale by Springfield Armory, so he has the extra magazines.

I've already got a 1911 in the form of a Kimber Stainless that I've tweaked here and there to get it where I want, but it was purchased before they started putting rails on pistols. I'm also well aware of the love/hate for Kimber, so a Kimber can be debated whether it is a "good 1911" or not.

I'm leaning towards getting it, but I gotta save money towards it and work on the wife. Thanks for the input...it's the info I was looking for. Just out of curiosity, why do you prefer the bushing to a bull barrel?

I think you should get it, you're looking at the TRP Operator and it's a very nice gun.

I prefer the bushing because it's traditional on the 1911 and allows for better fitting than the bull barrel version IMO. My carry Dan Wesson is bushingless with the bull barrel and it's an outstanding gun in all respects, the rest of my 1911's are all traditional bushings.

I'm admittedly a 1911 addict, I own 9 of them and am going to pick up a TRP one of these days to replace the one I sold. I have a Kimber as well and I'm quite happy with mine, I also have a Nighthawk, Wilson Combat, Ed Brown, S&W Performance Center, and 4 Dan Wessons I wouldn't be surprised if when I get another TRP it's a bull barrel, I have no hesitation buying a bull barrel TRP.

Hope this helps and hope you get the TRP.

Thanks, but I was wrong on the price he offered me...it's actually $1100, not $1150. I rechecked the text he sent me, so the lower price is confirmed.

I've read on here in several threads that you are "the 1911 man" and I hoped you would answer with your opinion. I am envious of your collection, especially the Wilson Combat and Nighthawk Custom. I've been allowed to handle (not shoot) a Nighthawk and it was smoooooth.

Naw, I'm a poor man's JoeOU1. HE is the 1911 man.

Cuda probably knows more about the platform than I do as well. I just dig the guns.

Good luck, if you get it make sure to let us know.

$1100 OTD for a LNIB TRP Operator is a pretty good deal. I say go for it. :)

Your friend is providing you one of the best deals on the market. My message is late as I am new to “this” forum. The full rail /dust cover isn’t several hundred dollars just for the looks? The bull barrel + the full rail holds the weight down at the end of barrel, the weight distribution there is what keeps lesser recoil and steadier aim. You add a nice light on it and it’s going to feel like shooting a 9mm. These are some of the real reasons why the full rail plays a part.

Did anyone else notice that now, when you purchase a SA1911, they no longer provide the case with the cheap holster and mag holsters? It’s a frikkin range bag with a SA logo on it. I think it’s pretty fresh and sweet they do that now.

ROADEX, you revived my thread! Thanks, because I actually do have an update. As expected, my buddy didn't sell the gun and about a year later, with my portion of our tax return, I convinced my wife of how good of a deal it was. She met with my buddy and convinced him to lower the price $100 more!

I now have the bull barrel, half rail TRP Operator that was unfired from the original purchaser for $1000 OTD! I'm thrilled! I replaced the guide rod with a Dawson Precision tool-less guide rod and everything is peachy. There is a VERY slight creep in the trigger and the pull is heavier than my Kimber, but I'll wait to see if it smooths out over time. I've attached a Surefire X300 Ultra light and couldn't be happier.

Heck yeah, you did the right thing by pimping out the female companion to do the sales talk. It always helps bring down the price. First of all, even my own brother who is our local LEO can’t even get the kind of pricing you just got. The power of woman is real dude, so let them have their double standards. We can get high end 1911’s for cheaper so good trade.
Let me know once you have some range time, 50/50 you may have to adjust the sights with someone who knows how to do that accurately. The 3/4 rail TRP is nothing but amazing. I just needed to have the full rail bull barrel as it is rare, and because of the kind of deal I got right out of the box. It too was an impulse purchase with my credit card that I will pay off in several months.
Congrats on the attachment! Coincidentally I just got my steamlight attachment last night from the mail, as that’s what my brother and his department uses to clear rooms. (Exactly same ones they use). Now... show us the gun porn mate, where’s the picture?! Why are you holding out on me.

I bought a Range Officer Operator and I did get a hard case but no extras.
I would have rather had the range bag instead.

What?! Uncle bob. They told me they discontinued doing that for all the Springfield 1911s. Can I see the hardcase they provided you with? Rumor has it that if they do that, it’s because it’s still the models that are before 2018 or some nonsense. Picture for us.

Hey Roadex, thanks for the tip!

I know what you meant by the joke...just the terminology when referring to the woman I love as the employee of a pimp, you understand...

As for the adjustable sights, I love them, but you seem to think I’m a marginal shooter...? I’m not a cop, but I carry a gun for a living and qualify consistently above 95% as well as a regular 3-gun shooter. I know my way around a gun or two...

Thanks again for the photo tip. Hasta luego...

Oh my god... look at that thing or beauty everyone... always looks better when it’s the actual persons photos after new purchase.. I am so jealous right now. I spent about an extra 700 dollars in total from what you have paid. Now wear her out and let us know how sweet it was. Didn’t you say it was a full rail though? I must have read that wrong.

In the original post I referred to "NOT a full dust cover" and in post #14 I said it is a half rail. I originally said I'd PREFER a full rail, but can't find one anywhere close to the price for what I purchased this one for. My original post may have been worded a bit confusingly. I managed to get my Surefire for $20, so that's a nice bonus too. There's a story behind that...

So the whole setup you see in the photo cost me about $1100 with the Dawson Precision tool-less guide rod, the pistol (unfired except from the factory) and the weapon light. I'm happy...

The bag vs. the hard case box is Springfield doing what the high end 1911 guys have done for years. If you buy an Ed Brown, Wilson Combat, or Nighthawk you get a bag just like the Springfield one in the picture.

I've never used or cared about the bags, or the cases, but if I had to have one I'd take the bag. Takes up less space in the gun closet.

I don't mind bags either but most of my pistols are in hard cases.

Springfield should ditch the shitty holster and mag pouch they hand out anyway. They're cheap, break and not suitable for any real duty. Throw in an extra mag instead. Or a little Otis cleaning kit.
