First of all, Happy Halloween fellow XD Brothers (and Sisters). I found out this week that my work will be passing out generous holiday bonus's this year. I plan on using it to purchase a HD shotgun. Whether I plan on buying a Mossberg or Remington is beside the point right now ;). My main question is, when I purchase this gun, what type of ammo would you recommend as good, all around range practice ammo for close range target practice? I'm also referring to ammo that's easy on the wallet. Any and all opinions are welcome. Thanks guys!

For range practice, I shoot a lot of #6 shot game loads in my Mossy. It patterns nicely in the 15 to 25 foot range and is cheap to shoot.

For home defense, I use either 00 Buck (8 pellets) Managed Recoil loads or #4 Buck (27 pellets) depending on my mood, but usually the 00. The #4 Buck has the advantage of lower over-penetration.

I practice with the home defense loads at the range from time to time, but generally stick with the #6 shot game loads to keep costs down at the range.

    Just my 2 cents...

Thanks NC Dave. That was exactly what I was needing to know. I wish I could pick up a new shot gun now, but I'm trying to stay away from the cards!

Any birdshot will be relatively cheap to shoot. I shoot 00 buck shells and 4 shot on the range. You can get a box of 15 00 bucks for like $7 at wally world. I keep reduced recoil 00 buck in it at home, it kicks like birdshot, and it patterns pretty damn well.

#4 or #6 from walmart for range and #00 for in the house. walmart has the best price it seems.

i also debated remington or mossberg.....just get both. the 870 HD is nice as is the mossberg 590
