The thing that bothers me about spare ammo in a glove box, if I can get to my car U can probably escape the kill zone. I am going to my car to escape, not to get more ammo. It's not a bad idea at all, just has limited value IMO. Your spare ammo is best on your body where the fight is likely to be.
I just installed a Magguts kit in one of my Shield 7 round mags. It allows me to carry 8 +1 without extending the length of the grip. With a spare extended mag, that gives me 16 rounds.
I think I had already taken my lunesta before my original post, so I may have been loopy. I carry a xds 45, but also own a xd9sc I can carry and will possibly bump up to an hk p30.
I either carry my XDs 9mm 7+1 with a spare 7 round mag or my XDSC .40 9+1 with a 12 round spare mag. I have considered switching to the new mid mags for my XDs but have not done so yet. Mainly I try to stay aware and avoid situations.
Agreed, and if the crowd keeps coming while your shooting at them, then nothing is going to stop them from over powering you and taking your gun anyway.
You can carry full sized mags in your sub compact if you really want to. I have the same gun as you and I stuff a 16 rounder in there whenever I can, or feel like it. I've been there and back again with this topic. Started carrying with a full size xdm, 19 rounds, way to big. Then tried a few single stacks like the Beretta nano and shield. At the end of the day I decided a sub compact double stack was the best choice for me.
I may be old but I can shoot straight and still run fast.
I prefer to maintain situational awareness and avoid bad situations.
My wife also carries, and she can shoot just a good.
I think that used to be the case but more and more self defense shootings are requiring several shots. When you have 3 thuggies with guns in a store and you are stuck in a back aisle you will need a reload. Too many recent occurrences.
i currently carry a XD9SC. got my cloak tuck 2.0 for better stability when i carry the 16 rounder. but i usually carry the 13 round mag. i considered buying a single stack 9mm but im not comfortable chopping my capacity in half. 13+1 works for me.
Honestly if you get into a situation that requires a mag change, you are most likely not going to come away unscathed. I understand a spare mag is primarily for malfunctions, but still is carried just in case. If I would ever have to go to my backup mag with either gun, it will be used to provide cover fire to "GET OUT OF DODGE!"
I just recently switched my EDC from the xds which is 7+1 to the Mod 2 which is 13+1 since the size is so comparable on the two models, I felt the higher capacity was better. But, I plan on getting a Sig p238 which is 6+1 for carry in summer clothes because women's clothes are harder to conceal in so I'll be down on capacity and caliber there. But I'd rather carry a smaller gun that I can hide than no gun at all.
after the thing with the motorcycle gang and the guy in the SUV up in NYC, I have tried to start carrying my XDMc with the full size mag as a back up on a more steady basis. Sometimes clothing just doesn't permit much more than a small .380, but whenever possible it is a minimum of the CW40 with a spare mag..... preferably the XDMc. ALso have started carrying a long gun on any trips more than just in town.
Besides the movie theater shootings or the mall shootings, stories about self defense shootings where the victim had to use more than 6 or 7 rounds are pretty easy to find if you google them. In these cases it looks like the victim would have lost the fight if they didn't have at least a high capacity handgun. There are even more stories where a victim was killed because they were outgunned.
Depends on where I'm headed...downtown seattle..I pack my XDS appendix carry (5+ 1 w/extra 5rd mag) and a shoulder holstered XDM (13+1 w/extra 13rd mag)
Count-em up that's a potential 38rds of 45acp down range if needed...I may need to get a tactical knife for backup though!
no. ct says i only need 10 rounds and i trust the wisdom of the lawmakers in this state. they have closely investigated every possible scenario and couldn't find one where i would need more than 10 rounds.
I opted for a full size grip, g17, so with that came 2 more rounds, people watch movies and convince themselves your out of ammo. So I have a spare mag to coldly put a fresh mag in the gun to prevent social speculation of how many rounds I have left in the gun. That ends up with 35 rounds, Used to be 31 meh.
I did put a knife on my left side instead of my right due to group attacks.
