I own several guns but not a 45, I hear the 1911's are great but they need alot of TLC? I really dont care about the brand I am just looking for a good quality home defense/ target gun. When I say target I mean just shooting with friendly competition. I dont like the way the glocks feel, and I want something pretty good quality like my Hi Points.

Most 1911's are extremely rugged. Now if you spend over $1,000, you might want to be gentle with it, just because of the price. However, most 1911 can be thrown down onto cement ,picked up and still blow out the X ring at 7 yards.

You know I've been thinking about buying a Hi Point just so I can get some firsthand experience with them, because I've learned that just because some people trash a brand doesn't mean squat. I'd rather speak from experiences than parrot what others have said.

That being said, my XD45 compact was a great pistol. Never once gave me trouble, went bang every time I pulled the trigger and shot where I pointed it. It was the most boring pistol I had ever owned, and that's high praise coming from me. As for other options, 1911's are fine pistols. If you're not sure you're going to keep it, you can always buy a Rock Island Armory 1911A1-FS with a 5" barrel and see if that makes your pants tight.

I'd also look into the S&W M&P45, and I've heard great things about CZ 97's chambered in .45 as well.

There's a whole host of options out there, you just have to get out to the gunshop and put some in your hands to find out what you like.

For the money....get an FNX-45 or FNP-45. You won't regret it. Great quality, reasonable price and 15 round mags. Perfect for home defense or a day at the range.

I have a Springfield 1911 A1 that's about 10 years old and I always think of silk and steel when I shoot it. Very smooth, good trigger, very easy recoil. I have always liked the heavier guns and it's similar to my Baby Desert Eagle II .40. The 1911 is definitely one of my favorites.

They do. Hi Points, while being dirt cheap and ridiculous to detail strip, tend to be reliable and reasonably accurate.

Disregard what you heard about 1911's. Most of the bad rap they get come from junk mags or an extractor that needs to be properly tuned.

What's your budget on the pistol, knowing that we can better recommend some options.

Rock Island for a cheap reliable 1911. For a good all around 45 -- Glock, XD, M&P, Ruger P series, H&K. Pick your poison. They are all good all around guns.
