From the FBI web site, over the
    past several years, the number
of deaths inflicted upon LEO by
    the BGs, have been decreasing.

    Surprisingly, deaths of LEOs, are
caused by the .38special and the
.40S&W, both had six kills each of
    LEO through their body amour.

In the civilian world, the lowly
.22cal LR is still the top dog in
kills of any caliber. Of course we
do not wear body amour, but the
    stats speak for themselves.

The gathering of the FBI data is
what has been submitted to them
    by participating agencies.

Could be that bigger is not always
better, like in .22cal LR vs. .45ACP!

I go by the rule of "if i put two in your chest and one in your head, does it really matter what caliber it is?

but Ed, those are some interesting findings, thanks for sharing

38 special THROUGH body armor? I gotta wonder how close those shootings have to be for a .38 to go through body armor. Might have to get some kevlar and do a few experiments.

The problem is that they don't come to this conclusion by equal shots fired by different calibers. What I'm saying is that they are leaving out vital information such as how many shots at and actual hits were there from different calibers? If say 1000 shots were taken with .22's and 10 of them were fatal but only 7 shots were taken with .45 and all 7 were fatal then the conclusion would still be that .22's were more deadly.

Yes it is like the old statement that it is more dangerous to drive within 10 miles of your home because that is where most accidents happen. Well most of us do most of our driving within 10 miles of our homes, so of course that is where most accidents occur.

I'd bet 7.62 x 25 has killed more people than all others combined from World War 2. People were lined up and mowed down with that round all day long.

my buddy has a tokarev tt33 from ww2 that shoots the 7.62 x 25, it is a very fast, powerful bullet. no doubt many deaths occured with that caliber. i think the bullets are hard to get too because he always collects the shells and repacks.

Don't assume the body armor is in good operational condition. Sweat, UV rays, wear&tear all reduce the lifespan of body armor. Many LEO agencies don't have sufficient funds to replace it at the proper intervals and continue using body armor that is no longer operationally sound.

Also, don't assume the body armor is a Kevlar. It could be made of lesser grade materials.

That FBI site has a lot of good info
posted. You just have to poke around
    and read the stats.

Even apply for a job if you so desire!
