My WASR AK has a little bit of rust on it, and I was wondering if engine paint was a good, cheap alternative to other kinds of finishes. I got this can of rustoleum stuff that says it's heat resistant up to 500F, and is gas and oil resistant. Any problems with using this stuff? Will it rub off on my hands easily? The AK is just a beater/truck gun, so I don't really care about the super expensive finishes. Not going to pay a few hundred bucks to duracoat a rifle that only cost me $400.

I just found out they have a "high heat" version that resists up to 2000F. How hot can the barrel of an AK get after putting a couple hundred rounds downrange?

check out molyresin. Its very inexpensive.

If its a beater gun, i think you will be pleased. You still have to prepare the surface, and tape stuff off, but as long as you have modest expectations it seems like it could come out ok.
