The only way that it isn't a good idea would be if you have a fully rifled barrel the slugs are the cheapie remington slugs which aren't meant for a rifled barrel. They are the ones in the small five round boxes, are everywhere in wally world during deer season and come in a green/yellow box. If you shoot those slugs through a rifled barrel you can damage the rifling in the barrel. If you have a smooth bore "bird" barrel on the shotgun you should have no problem shooting any slugs through it, though I don't recomend rifled slugs through a smooth barrel because you won't get the accuracy you need out of them, but that shouldn't damage the gun.

If you're using slugs for HD, and you have a smooth barrel on it, then I'd say get some of the cheapie remmy slugs and they should work.

Rifled slugs are for smooth barrels with a choke that isn't too tight: mod or cylinder.

Rifled slugs are NOT for rifled barrels

Sabot Slugs (the kind w/ the plastic sleeve around the bullet) are intended for RIFLED barrels only.

I'd assume it's a choke on the end of the barrel, is it a tight, or spread pattern? If it's a tight pattern choke, then no, you shouldn't be shooting slugs. If it's a wide pattern, then slugs are OK, so long as they're rifled. Does it have changeable chokes (there will be a tube with little notches inside the end of the barrel for the choke wrench)?? If so, you can change the choke to one that's good for slugs.

The remington sluggers SUCK for any distance over 25 yards, they're underpowered. That might be good for home defense though. I'd get the winchester slugs, much better performance. As far as accuracy, anything up to 50 yards is pretty decent with a smooth bore and winchester cheapo rifled slugs. After 50, they drop like a rock though. It's more than good enough to kill a deer.

Forgot to mention, If you have changeable chokes, do NOT shoot anything ever without a choke tube installed.... since you lost the manual I thought it might be worth mentioning.

you can shoot rifled slugs but you can not shoot sabot slugs unless you have a damascus or twist bore barrel

    Or a rifled-extended choke tube.

I would say if you probably have a open bore cylinder, which means you have no choke. In that case yes you can shoot slugs. Also you can shoot slugs if you have a modified choke tube. You can tell this by, if a dime will drop through the business end of your barrel. I bought some Breneke slugs for my 500, and they shot no problem. Also you do not have to have rifled slugs, to shoot through a smooth bore barrel
