Okay, finally time to get the old AR and I really need some suggestions. I have decided on Daniel Defense and M&P 15. Found both for around $1000 which is definitely my price range. Need some pros and cons between the two. DD is M4 carbine. What do you guys think? By the way, I'm not just plinking at the range......I wanna knock the dyck off a hummingbird. In Other words.....using for self-defense too.

Both quality ARs. Really depends on which models. Personally, I think the S&W M&P Optics Ready model, which can be had from about 800 bucks more or less depending on where you find them, is a steal for the quality you get. Fit and finish are flawless AND leaves room for a decent scope (like a Nikon M223) or a first class set of iron sights like Troy or YH BUIS.

A choice between two great rifles is a pleasure. For me, I made it in favor of the S&W but you can't go wrong with either , IMHO.

I would say it's a good problem to have when choosing between the two.

I'd say DD. I had a M&P and liked it alot. Ended up selling it and then of course wanting another. Went with a RRA and like it ALOT. But have also considered adding a DD too the collection as well.

if those are your two options, dd hands down. the dd is more of a fighting carbine.

I have not seen a DD for less than $1200.-, sounds like you found a great deal. In Socal the M&P's run $200.- less, you may want to wait and look at the new M&P Sporter; it's retail is about $700.- and it uses the same lower as all the other M&P's.

I'm pretty sure the sporter won't have a chrome moly barrel though.

I really like the DDM4 from DD that's the AR I want to end up with but I can't justify the price when I built my AR for 1/2 tue price.

I have an MP15 and love it, but if you can get the DD for the same price, I would go with the DD...:) Good luck and don't forget the pics when she comes in...

Re the Smith and Wesson Sport models. No dust cover or bolt assist. The bbl. is 1/8 but not chrome lined like the 1/9 on the originals. It really is a gun marketed to casual shooters and entry level AR buyers on a tight budget.

As I stated, the Optics Ready model may be the real buy in the class. Everything but sights and who doesn't change those. With Military discounts, some at the S&W boards have bought them for 599!

Again, while the DD enjoys a great rep., the M&P has been flawless for me. Absolutely no reason to knock it and it drips with quality.;)

i dont have any experience with dd but from what i hear they are very good, i do however own a m&p-15 moe edition that i picked up for 900 and it has chewed up and spit out everything from tula to federal to straight up m855 nato green tip in less than perfect conditions. its more accurate than i am although the eotech i put on there helps me out a ton. im sure either choice will work out in your favor
