I am looking to buy my first 1911 and would appreciate some advice. The primary use for this gun will be shooting it at the range. I know that I want a 5" barrel and I want it to be .45 acp. I want to do this right the first time and not buy a gun now that I will only want to replace in a year's time. My budget is around $1,250.

I have rented 4 so far; 2 SA's (a TRP and a Mil Spec), 1 Kimber, and 1 S&W. Out of the 4 my favorite was the TRP by far.

The range where I shoot doesn't have a Trophy Match for rent, which is disappointing because it is a gun that really interests me. Today while I was looking at the 1911s that they have for sale the sales person who I was talking to recommended that I spend another couple of hundred dollars and go w/ a Dan Wesson Valor. They don't have one of these for rent either...

So for those who have experience w/ these guns any thoughts as to the Trophy Match vs The Valor? Also, how does the TRP compare to the Trophy Match from a quality perspective?

Any feedback will be appreciated. Thanks!

Dan Wesson Valor's are sweet! I love my Kimber but would buy a Valor in a heartbeat if I could afford it.

I own a SA TRP, SA EMP, SA Loaded and a Rock Island Match. The TRP is by far my favorite. It shoots great and the fit and finish is great for a production gun.

With that said I would go with a Dan Wesson Valor. A few days ago I was in a LGS and was able to fondle a Dan Wesson Valor for the first time. It is a beautiful gun with excellent fit and finish, minimal roll marks (the anti TRP), outstanding trigger pull (guessing about 4lbs) and no MIM parts.

I was always intrigued by DW 1911s but was never able to play with one when it came time to purchase a higher end 1911 so I went with the TRP. If I had it to do over again I would buy the DW.

The Valor is better than the TRP by a bit and blows Kimber out of the water.

Kimber doesn't make a gun worth over 900 bucks.... they stamp custom on them and charge a heck of a lot more.

in truth i read the thread title and thought it was a joke, dan wesson is so much better of a gun its hardly a comparison. nothing wrong with a trp, great gun but your comparing a premium factory gun to a semi custom

if you can afford the valor go for it, if not the trp with more ammo might be better use of funds.

Thanks for all of the feedback. You have made it pretty clear. I don't know if I am done searching for the 1911 that I am going to buy yet, but I do know that it looks like if it is in between the Valor and the Trophy Match for a few hundred dollars more the Valor is the way to go.

I have a trophy match and a stainless trp. They are almost identical guns, different sights and finish is about all i noticed. I debated between the trp and the valor for a while, and went with the trp because it was in stock at the lgs. I would have needed to special order the valor, and i wasn't comfortable with buying a gun sight unseen. I do hope to ad a valor to the collection eventually!

D.W. are really great values for the money. Kimbers aren't.
