For any of you guys who have renewed or are getting one for the first time recently what has been your wait time? I sent it in a little over a month ago and they cashed the check a few days after I sent it. I have not received my FOID card yet and am getting a little annoyed.

By law they are supposed to send your card or a response within 30 days and I haven't received anything yet.:-(

I got mine in 20 days. I just sent in my wifes application a few days ago. They have gotten caught up, but depending upon staffing it might have gotten backed up again.

Here is the State Police # for FOID questions.

    <TABLE width="100%"><TBODY><TR><TD class=tmpl_blueshading>Firearm Owner Identification</TD><TD class=tmpl_blueshading>
    (217) 782-7980
    </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Last time we did it (maybe two years ago), about 4-5 weeks; oh yeah, the check was cashed in under a week. Good thing you are renewing now... if in the fall (hunting season) figure twice as long.

Glad we don't need an FOID where we live now.

Thanks for the replies. I find it funny they have no trouble getting the check cashed immediately but it takes forever to get the card.

I think mine took four to five weeks,

    From Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FOID_(firearms))
A FOID card legally must be granted within 30 days from the date the application is received, unless the applicant does not qualify. However, by January 2006, the backlog had increased and the State Police were taking as long as 50 days, in violation of the law, to issue or deny the FOID.[2] Cards issued on or after June 1, 2008 are valid for ten years; cards issued prior to June 1, 2008 are valid for five years.[3] The FOID card will be revoked before its expiration if the individual becomes disqualified as described above.

I had read where they said they were getting around 40% done within 12 days after last years massive delays were over with.

I don't see how they get some of them done in 10-15 days and others take way longer. I can see if they haven't even opened the envelope but once they open it up and cash the check not sure why 1 would take way longer than the other.

I just applied for my FOID card for the first time on August 23rd and I hope I'm one of the lucky few to get it on time. I've been reading the responses on this forum from everyone and it seems like it's really hit or miss depending on the month/time of year. A buddy of mine did his in July and got his back in the 3 weeks with no issues. I think I took the right steps by filling out my application online and then printing it off so that way there's no issues trying to read someone's handwriting. I've also heard that if I haven't received my FOID in the mail within 30 days to contact my state rep. Is there anyone that can give me some advice to this?

Considering this thread was started 2.5 years ago, I hope the original poster finally got his FOID! I don't remember how long it took me to get mine. It was about 25 years ago when I lived in Carbondale. I do like the photo ID of it and actually wish my CPL out here in WA state looked like that.

Used my FOID a number of times as ID when I lived in SE Asia in the 90's and early '00's

I knew a lady that used to work at the DNR head quarters in town. She's retired now but she knew the people that were in charge of processing it all. While i don't remember exactly how many i want to say that there is a total of like 2 employees doing the FOID card proccessing for the whole state. Now whether or not to beleive her i don't know, but i have no reason not too.

Wow 2 employees? That's pretty ridiculous. Granted I know it's not a huge percentage of the state who want's to posses a firearm but still that number is way too small to suffice everyone trying to renew/apply. I think the FOID is a good idea but that the system of it definitely needs to be upgraded. Granted a series of background checks can take some time but by us being in the technology age, we should have little to no problems processing and mailing out these on time.
