Is it just me or does it seem that, while the cost of 9mm and .40 cal are dropping, the cost of .45 ACP is rising? It's jumped $2-$3/box at my local LGS lately, and noticed similar increases at some of my favorite on-line suppliers. Does anyone have a preferred on-line vendor that's still reasonably priced?
Not bad ammo, IMHO. Their .223 cycles my AR and hits the target, not too dirty either.
The .22LR HV 36 grain run well through my Ruger MK /// and my M&P 15-22.
The cheapest I've found is rolling my own, though.
It's the bullet that drives the difference in price. Not much powder in a .45 acp. Case costs the same. Primer costs the same. But that big beautiful 230 grain projectile is kind of expensive.
Food for thought,
If you ONLY shoot 100 rounds a month ---
1. Time -- It takes me less than 30min. start to finish on my RCBS PRO2000
2. Cost -- Cheap 45 acp on line, about 40 cents/ $40.00 per 100
My loads, hasmat - shipping everything 13 cents/ $13.00 per 100
SO, one year you save $324.00, and takes only 6 hrs/ yr of your time. (and it is fun)
Two years, you have your RCBS press paid, it will last a lifetime, no more cost.
THEN, and this is important, you can say, "look honey, see how much we can save."
HOPE THIS HELPS, your cost issue.
I've had great luck with armscor .45acp. Clean burning zero failures. Reloading is more fun than I thought it would be and very glad I started doing it. Going to upgrade to a progressive soon. One more thing. You won't save any money reloading. You'll just shoot more. I bought a couple thousand projectiles when I started and figured they'd late a while. I was wrong. Shooting is twice the fun, if your up for a challenge you should definitely try it.
I have been seeing 45 acp for 21 to $28 per 50 rounds. I NEVER have had trouble with the federal champion target ammo and I find it and Winchester white box fairly cheep. I own a 1940s era 1911, a friend reloaded for me and it would have failure to feed issues consistently. Never had trouble with any factory ammo but I have no desire to shoot steel cased through it. I bet with today's reloading equipment it's possible to make ammo that will feed through it
Selway Armory currently has .45 Blazer for $17.99 per 50.
PSA has Fiocchi for the same price. They have it on sale once in a while for $16.99. That's about as cheap as I have seen brass cased .45. I shoot Fiocchi mostly. Good ammo.
American Eagle is good too. Can usually find the 100 round box for $39.99 at PSA.
If you are serious about shooting, you need to reload, start casting your own rounds, I produce 100 rounds of 45acp for under $4.00, been saying it for years, is anyone listening at all?
Judging by the volume of people reloading I don't think you gave been sharing a big secret. Some people don't have the time, place or knowledge to do it. I reload so I can shoot more but don't have time or interest in chasing after lead and making bullets even though that is a big savings.
Same here. With my current stock, .45 ammo costs me about 15 cents a round. When I get into the newer stock, it'll jump to about 18. Affordable, but not as cheap as casting your own.
I am really lucky. An older guy from church with 20 years experience took me under his wing. He has also gave me hundreds of dollars worth of reloading stuff.
Remember him this Xmas!
Self taught is fine, I've been doing it once 1974, as a hobby & professionally for awhile. Self teaching is great, you just have a longer learning curve. The Internet can be a Great source today, but also a lot more bad info available too.
I used a single-stage RCBS for years, the went to a Redding turret that I gave to my son when I bought a Dillon. I'm glad for the stages I went through, not having been as fortunate as your having a teacher.
I've been reloading since 1975, and can't begin to estimate how much I've saved.
I definitely will remember him at Christmas. Recently I bought my first pair of the electronic ear muffs. I liked them so well I bought him a pair. He is old school all the way, but when I had him put them on and then while talking to him clapped my hands he immediately got a big smile on his face. He is an awesome guy and a good friend.
It has been dropping at Wal-mart here, It's back down to Pre Sandy Hook prices now. 38.88 for 100 rounds winchester white box. $35 I think for Federal Champion..
My Dillions paid for themselves long ago. Last I checked, loading my own ammo saves me on average about half the cost of loaded ammo.
I don't figure in my hourly wage in to my reloading cost because I don't figure in my hourly wage into cost of the books I read.
Or the shooting that you do. Still, if your time is valuable, buy better gear. I can easily do 700rds/hr on my 650, including loading the primer tubes. At a savings of $10/50 in 45acp, that is like paying myself $140 AFTER taxes. So who here makes a net $140/hr, uh, not me. I can't afford the time NOT to reload.
