Is there anywhere I can buy a stainless bolt carrier for my AK-47? Thanks!
I'm looking for something like this to replace my WASR-10/63 blued:
My friend just stripped and polished his on his ak. I'll probably do the same if I buy one.
Stripped mine and used bake on GunKote on it, according to GunKote its a very slippery surface, seems true to me, I do not oil the bolt or the carrier
So underneath the bluing is stainless steel or chrome and you're polishing it?
Is this correct?? Also how do you strip the finish?
You can purchase some sort of blue remover (it's a very mild acid), use fine steel wool, or polish it out with compound. I recommend using all three. Steel Wool first, the blue remover, then finish it up with some jeweler's rouge compound.
Removed the bluing on my AK-47 Bolt carrier and I see no silver or chrome.... I'm pissed that I wasted money on this.
It looks way worse without bluing...
Wow... looks like I was wrong... went alittle bit deeper with steel wool and there's a silvery look.... just what I was after. THERES SILVER IN THEM BOLTS.
Post a pic when finished. Still curious
I put the bolt in a in a bucket of muriatic acid. Then put the bolt in a bucket of water and baking soda.
Then put the bolt in plain water and rinsed it off.
Then used WD-40 to remove it.
The bolt then looked like bare metal... I used sandpaper and steel wool to polish it down.
Now it looks like it's inbetween a matt and brushed chrome Desert eagle.. just what I was wanting.
I'll post a pic soon.
awesome glad it worked out for ya
home depot sells NAVAL JELLY
it will remove the blueing. takes about 5-10 min and a few coats
easy to do. polishing it is hardest. mine has alot of machining marks on it, if I was anal I could of took time and filed it all smoother but I didnt
only 2 passes on a small buffer wheel, im not going for mirror chrome, just silver
after a couple mags it get sooty from the powder and starts to get a black dust on it. but a quick wipedown and looks better
Is the GunKote way superior to having a factory finish bolt and just oiling the rail interfaces or the lands and grooves of the bolt area on the carrier or about equal?
I like the look on AKguy's pistol. It also means any dings or nicks won't stand out as much if some of the black gets knocked off. I am definitely interested.
here is what I didnt see because of the blueing
I was able to use a soft grinder wheel to get rid of most of the scratches, but unless I got in there with a hand file or something else I cant get rid of it all. there are a few parts like this, like my front sight has these lines too.
Now my wasr came alot nicer from the factory, no sanding needed at all
You strip off the blue and 'burn' the oil into the bolt carrier. No different than making a knife from a lawnmower blade. You polish it hard with oil. Same way the Chinese do. Not all ChiCom bolts are chromed.
If there is such an item, I'd be interested, too!
Where could I send my bolt to get it really "chromed" (like with chromium). I have the stainless steel polished really well, but want something with a little more corrosion resistance.
