In the past when I've acquired a used gun it was either through a dealer or through a person whom I've known so the issue of a firearms background has not come into play. But recently I've been looking to sell/trade a cheap motorcycle and an offer I got was for a gun and I'm very interested in making the trade but I'm a little leary of not knowing the history of the gun. I've asked to have the serial number emailed to me so I can reasearch it but I really don't know what to do next. Do I just call my local PD and tell them what's up?

    I doubt they'll do anything.

Create a bill of sale to CYA.

Most local police depts will run the serial number...but all that will tell you is if its coming up stolen, and then if it does your required to turn in the firearm.

Get a bill of sale, or copy of persons drivers license to show who you obtained the firearm through if anything ever was to happen.

bill of sale that you right their drivers license on you copy it obviously. You should be fine with their signature by the date. If your really worried, loan it to a gun range and ask them to rent it out, until they have fired 2k rounds through it.

In Tennessee we can run your serial number through NCIC but it will only tell if it is stolen or not . If you want a copy of the original owner it is a lot more complicated . Guns in Tn do not have to be registered like a car does .
When you run a car through NCIC is comes back with the current owners information and all . With guns it is stolen or not stolen .
Just call an officer out to your house or on the phone and give him the serial number and they should run it for you . We do it all the time .

Man things are different out your way....try and call a MI cop to your house to do a courtesy serial check on a gun and you'll probably get laughed off the phone.

I always just write the serial down and go to the sheriff's office and ask them to run before I buy. They always oblige.

Are you serious? Thats really rude of them . We go out to verify V.I.N numbers and such all the time . If we laughed at someone like that we'd get in serious trouble.

Hell you should come out to Detroit. Unless someone just died or some guy is shooting everyone in sight the cops aren't coming. And even then you better not hold your breath.

I called the Orange County Sheriff's Dept. before buying a used gun and they were very helpful and ran the serial for me to see if it was clean. It was. Got the gun and now both of us are living happily ever after. Only took about 5 minutes on the phone.

There's nothing like peace of mind.

In MI you have to take the gun to the PD before they will run the serial number, they won't just run any number you give them.
    Yes they are basically useless.

    LOL great quote.

although I wouldn't feel safe/right taking a gun into a police station...that just has bad time written all over it.

Not sure what the law is in MI but if you move to NY and have handguns you have to turn them all in to the county sheriff until you get a permit approved. Can take up to a year but 6 months is the norm. It really all depends on the county judge and his personal likes and dislikes concerning firearms.

Long guns in MI are not required to have any registration (other than the fed form if bought from a dealer). Hand guns are required to be registered, a purchase permit is required if you do not have a carry permit (carry permit allows you to bypass the purchase permit), but either way you must register it once you own it.

I had a question about a Marlin 30/30 rifle last year, on a local board a guy had one for $175.00 in like new condition. Well I wanted it, but the price set off the alarms in my head so I got the serial number from the guy and went to the police station to have them run it. They refused and told me if it comes back hot they need to have it right there to take it into custody. Needless to say I did not buy the rifle.

That really pissed me off how the popo won't help you figure out if you're buying stolen stuff or not..
